Fix for chips in glass?

My windshield has probably a dozen chips in the glass. Its all on the first layer of glass, obviously, and most are not visible unless I really look for them. Still, if there is a cheap way to cure them, I'd like to try.

Anyone have any advice? I saw "glass repair" kits at the auto store but I'm not sure they are exactly what I am looking for. Anyone have any experience here?

Safelite? I got 2 chips on track once, but after a few more corners the flex caused them to turn into long cracks. I have a $0 deductable now because of this. Insurance didn't go up when I filed.

I used the 3m epoxy kit (at least I believe it was 3m brand). Worked rather well. If you have one directly in the site line though may want to have a shop do it.

We used Safelite to fix chips in the rental cars all the time. Even if you have to pay out of pocket, it's not that expensive. $50 IIRC.

Had one fixed for free by a big chain car glass specialist.
Took the car in, because I was worried about cracks developing from the chip, they told me it wasn't an issue, then offered to fill it for free, as insurance doesn't cover such minor issues.

Your insurance will probably do this with no deductible.

This. Safelite (or others) fix these for cheap, and your insurance would rather you get the windshield repaired (chips/cracks) rather than have to get it replaced, never-mind the safety implications if the chips turn into cracks.

My cousin's glass was cracked and she hadn't noticed it because of dirt...but I found it when I gave the windshield a good cleaning...from one tip to the other end it was the size of a US quarter in diameter, at which size it was deemed too large to fix and the windshield was replaced...here in Florida paid for by the insurance company with no deductible...

Fix a Windshield (yeah, like Fix a Flat - can find it at Walmart) works pretty well... but like the others have said if your insurance has $0 deductible for replacing windshield I'd probably go that route with a dozen chips.

After dealing with Safelite years ago, I'll never use them again. I've heard a lot of bad stories about them since too. Most insurance companies will pay, with no deductable, to repair chips. Some insurance companies will forward you to their "glass claims" when you call but it might actually be Safelite. USAA tells you this upfront several times. Geico tries to hide it, so I'm told. But you don't have to have Safelite fix it. I'm having one repaired in a few days (not Safelite!).

I got one fixed in my previous car for free. I had just gotten the chip on a road trip a week or so before and they had a rep at the Class 6 on base. It took about 5 minutes to call and verify my insurance (Geico) and they were finished before I was off the phone.

<shrug> I've had good experiences with Safelite.

Last time I needed to replace an entire windshield safelite was by far the most expensive.

God what a crappy day that was, president was in the area so the had a rolling closure on the interstate, and I had an appointment to have the window swapped out about 25 miles away...only accessible via highway due to water crossings.

Call your auto insurance company. Allstate had my chipped windshield fixed for free on my old Honda. They sent me to some shop in my town. I just had Safelite replace my windshield replaced on my Mazda. So far so good...
