[FIXED] firewalling a network printer

manual here

I see the following tabs in the network config thingie (SyncThru they call it)

General, TCPIP, NetWare, SNMP, IPP, IPP Security, WINS, UPnP, SLP

None of them have the fields that I expected: allowed IP zone, TCP IP just has DHCP client on /off info pretty much

The printer is setup on the net, registered with our DHCP server, it gets an IP address automatically, I can find it on the network, install TCP IP port for it on my PC and print to it. All works very well, I just don't see what's stopping anyone else on the net from printing to it

Any ideas?

edit: ARGH, I just RDP'd into my PC 2 miles away, and setup a TCP IP printer, and in fact anyone CAN print to it... Very scared now, pls, help?

well you have a server (print server), its duty is to serve. So yeah, anybody can print to it.

from talking to other people that own network printers, there usually is a place in the config routine to limit the range of machines that can print directly to it, either by IP address or MAC address. I just need help finding a similar place in this printer.

I installed everything the samsung printer comes with, ie SetIP, SyncThru, and the drivers. None of them seem to have an option to limit the range of IP's the printer will accept jobs from

Nah, we all have to call tech-support sometimes. However, I'd search the net first and try other forums for the product first.

I submitted a tech support ticket on their website... Btw, noticed samsung provides a "HP WebjetAdmin_English (ver. 1.0)" so the printer can be managed through HP protocols (? wtf ?) . anyway, I will try that on monday, unless someone actually has an idea what thing does.

haha! I have emerged victorious! I have vanquished the evils of bad manuals and defeated samsung!

anyway, the web page interface has one more option over the samsung SyncThru application: namely "IP filtering"

all is well now.
