[Edit - 17.4.2 drivers enable HDR properly on Polaris graphic cards]

I have a Polaris (RX470) with 17.4.1 driver set, outputting to an LG OLED. RGB 8Bit 4K@60Hz, and YCbCr 4:2:2 12bit 4K@60Hz both display correctly. I prefer RGB 8bit, as the text does look better (even compared to YCbCr 4:4:4).

In any case, none of the pixel options allow me to turn on the newly added Windows HDR (Display Settings). There is so little information online about this. Almost all search results point to technology preview/news articles talking about Polaris HDR capabilities and none with actual user experiences.

I understand that Radeon drivers do allow you to have HDR in DirectX full-screen HDR supported games (RE7, Shadow Warrior 2 etc), though personally I have not tried those games. With Windows10 Creators Update however, the HDR is supported natively in the new WDDM 2.2 display driver model. Has anyone gotten this to work with Polaris?

Thanks for the reply.

There is a new driver out today (17.4.2) which says "Initial support for Windows 10 Creators Update". I hope that means, HDR switch will work now. I'll try it and report back.

Once the HDR starts working, the next step would be an intelligent toggle (either in Windows or in the drivers) to have the expanded color space only for HDR sources - that is, show the desktop and applications in SDR, but pass in the HDR metadata for HDR videos or games. The current Windows 10 implementation seems to force HDR on for everything.

Sounds like its in the new drivers:

High Dynamic Range (HDR)

With new games that support HDR, such as Mass Effect™: Andromeda, and the future release of Radeon FreeSync™ 2 5 monitors, HDR is becoming a standard. For those who do not know what HDR is, HDR is a new visualization technique that allows for lifelike gaming. HDR delivers lifelike gaming with vibrant colors, to show more detail with increased saturation, deeper contrasts, to display more gradients between differences in lighting, and increased brightness, to show realistic lighting effects without compromising shadows. With Windows 10 Creators Edition, HDR can now be enabled within all applications. If a game now supports HDR, the game will now benefit from these enhanced visuals, even in fullscreen, borderless fullscreen and windowed mode.

To push gaming further, Radeon Graphics can take advantage of both Windows Game Mode and HDR with the release of Windows 10 Creators Update, starting today.

Download Radeon Software 17.4.2 for your Windows 10 Creators Update ready driver and try out some of these features for yourself. 6

Yes, HDR works now with 17.4.2 driver. Pixel format has to be 10 or 12 bit, which means 4K RGB can only be at 30 Hz. 4K YCbCr 4:2:2/4:2:0 can have higher bit color format at 60Hz. This is an HDMI 2.0 spec limitation.

Now that Windows supports HDR, more and more video players should start supporting it too. Currently "Movies & TV" app in Windows10 can play the HDR10 videos properly, and they look breathtakingly awesome. Until now, I had to rely on built in TV apps (Netflix, Amazon, Video Player) to display HDR10 and DolbyVision coded content. Well, DolbyVision is still not natively supported, though gaming apps can technically pass DV content in full-screen DirectX exclusive mode (as before)

Good god, FINALLY. I can now enable HDR mode too with 17.4.2 drivers on an RX480, but I was able to do it on YCbCr 4:4:4. No way I can accept 4:2:2 for reading purposes - which is much of what I do. Everything looks a bit dull and lower contrast, but I'll recalibrate with my Spyder later today to see if it improves. I'd be happy to post the profile here if anyone wants it (using a samsung KU6290 which is the same as the KU6300).

UPDATE: I made an ICC profile with Spyder 5, but it doesn't seem to do any effect at all. It just looks washed out and flat. For now, I'm back to SDR signal with proper contrast on the desktop. Hopefully this improves soon.

Yes, I was able to get HDR working with 4K YCbCr 4:4:4 and 8bit @ 60Hz. I guess, there must be some banding then for displaying HDR10 videos, but it's much better than 4:2:2 for text clarity.

For now I have switched from RGB to YCbCr 4:4:4, but with HDR off in windows. Before running HDR videos, I switch on HDR in Display Settings. An auto-HDR setting would have been useful.
