Got a not-so-good NEC FE2111SB monitor off ebay a while back, the seller turned out to be awful.

yadda yadda yadda the monitor is refurbished and has some ghosting problems and vertical (kinda hard to see) lines going down the left side of the screen. Anything i can do to try and fix it? I'm not going to open up the monitor or anything like that, just wonder if i can do anything to try and fix it. I've tried switching the power cord/cable but it was still there. Also have tried degaussing, and un-surprisingly that didn't work either.

Yes, either buy a new monitor or if you have an independent TV repair person in your area, sometime they also work on computer monitors.

i think your best bet is to get a new one. how much did you pay for that thing? you should try to deal with the seller.

I wouldn't go anywhere near the insides of a CRT. The residual current in the focusing coils will kill you if you touch them.

A very painful burning death, I might add. Definitely find an electronics repair shop near you. You can even ask someplace like Circuit City or WorstBuy to look at it. They usually have their own repair shops (CC has one a couple towns over from me) to handle warranty repairs and may give you a good price on it.

I've personally always liked the "Office Space" sledgehammer approach to fixing computer hardware. Give it a whirl... you'll thank me tomorrow.

You would make the news if you killed yourself over an e-bay bad monitor purchase? I really dont recommend it because you could still make the news if you killed the seller. But then thats not a good thing either.

Just buy another monitor.

People who work on TVs know this and have the expertise to perform this service. I have a local TV repair person that fixes broken monitors for me all the time.

It is dangerous like everyone said, try to save up some money and get a new CRT or LCD. Not worth the risk of injuring yourself for a $100 monitor.

I have actually risked my life to fix my dying trinitron, many times at that. Well since I have no dependent family or anything, I guess I could be a little daring at times
Needless to say, I took utmost caution to avoid coming in contact with anything looks foreign other than the casing. In my case, the problem was excessive brightness and blurring to the point of headache induction. Unfortunately nothing good came out of the attempt, altho it was a fun to say the least. At the end I ended up getting another 22'', much happier now.

I read that last sentence and I was expecting something like 'At the end I ended up getting shocked'. :Q

I never said i was going to open it up.

How hard of a 'whack" should i give the side of my monitor? I have a bad feeling about that...

There's a local 2005FPW for sale, might be able to get it for a good price, i haven't heard many good things about it though... It's not as big vertical wise right?
