Fixing the "substandard" Renoir laptop "problem"...

Hello all!

I am saving to purchase a low end gaming laptop. I realize that, given my targeted budget, I'll have to make some compromises. However, even making those compromises, there is one glaring problem that it seems that all Renoir laptops are currently facing:. None of the vendors seem interested in giving them a decent screen!

So, here is my question:. Are there any Renoir models out there that, while having very poor screens, are largely up to par in most other categories AND have an equivalent Intel model that has a very good screen that can be purchased as a spare part and swapped into the Renoir laptop as an upgrade?

I'm not scared of this process, having replaced many laptop screens in the past and even having upgraded a few to higher refresh/resolution ones for friends and family.

As for the laptop that I'm currently looking to purchase, I'm quite interested in the new Acer Nitro 5 with the 4600h and 1650. Yes, I am well aware of the build quality issues with the Nitros, and that the 1650 isn't exactly a great video card. This is going to be my road laptop for when I travel for work. It's going to live in a padded pelican case in my car, only coming out in my hotel room. I'm not going to invest a lot of money into it in case it gets stolen or damaged, and at $669, it's not a bad value. I'm not overly concerned in the screen for it as it'll likely spend most of it's time plugged into the hotel TV for gaming and on a desk in low light for productivity tasks. What attracts me to it the most is the storage layout that early leaks indicate that it has: 2 x M.2 nvme that can be set to RAID 0 and a 2.5" cage for a data drive. This means that, if I decide to, I can vastly increase it's storage capacity and performance. It would be ideal in my book if they offered a version with a 4800h and a 1660 6gb as I could see that lasting a lot longer for gaming.

Yeah it's actually quite disgusting how sleazy and underhanded the OEMs are with AMD.
It's been going on for a long time, even when AMD was a poor performer OEMs put in extra effort to purposely nerf them.
Now matter how much better AMDs products are now, most OEMs still literally and purposely make them bad.

"AMD actually has the best high end CPU for gaming laptops? With better performance and battery life?!
Lets refuse to make any products that take advantage of that and cap them at an RTX 2060."

"AMD has the best midrange CPU as well? Literally up to twice as fast as Intels i5?!
Well then lets refuse to give them the same quality chassis, coolers, and screens."

"AMD has better pricing too?
What the hell, lets just charge the same as the Intel options and take the extra as profit.
Since we gimped the heck out AMD options, they'll also look terrible next to the Intel ones at the same price."

Crap like this really pisses me off.

At least there's one decent example of what an AMD laptop is capable of, in the Zephyrus G14.
I wonder how much money AMD had to throw at them in order to get a reasonable laptop commissioned.
Probably a few million plus free CPUs for every one of those units...just to show what's possible.

Despite how massively popular that model is, OEMs still refuse to follow suit (even Asus themselves, who make the G14).
Why would any company flat out refuse to make tons of money on a hugely popular and clearly superior product?
Even more baffling since all OEMs have extreme shortages of Intel CPUs, why wouldn't they take every AMD they could?
The only possible answer is that they're making more by not doing so, and AMD only has one competitor with that kind of money.

Double post?

Oh well, now's the time to remind people that only real TIN foil blocks the mind rays.
"They" have done a great job tricking most by switching it all to useless aluminum foil.

The Zephyrus G14 isn't really that great either because it has soldered in RAM and 1 socket, so you can only do dual channel up to 16 GB, even if you have 24 GB in there. Plus, it probably has an Intel 660p SSD, which is a terrible SSD for a main drive.

Yeah there are quite a few issues with the G14.
That's why I said it was a decent example, not a good or great one.

The fact that this high priced, average laptop still significantly beats premium Intel options says a lot about what could be.

I don't understand why OEMs are going through the extra expense to develop entirely new and highly subpar laptops for AMD.
Why not take good designs that already exist (save that R&D), and then only spend to develop AMD internals that can "drop in".
To be clear, I'm not suggesting they pop an AMD CPU into an Intel socket or anything, but develop a new mainboard etc.
It's just as hard, or harder, to develop the mainboard etc. along with an entirely new chassis for these new crappy laptops.
