Flaky problems with browsers

Hello

I have a friend thats started having some issues with cookies and passwords, mainly on ebay but some other sites as well. This supposedly is happening with both Firefox and IE which is strange.

For instance on Ebay she keeps getting a message that cookies aren't getting accepted and when she's logged into Ebay she also keeps getting asked for her password all the time. And the browser doesn't seem to be refreshing correctly either, not showing the correct number of auctions she has going or the correct times. Another example, she'll log in go to her auctions, refresh, says can't accept cookies, ask for password, just a viscious circle like that. And a few times it will generate one of those would you like to send an error report to Microsoft messages.

Nothing has really changed with the computer, it started acting up like this a couple of weeks ago and has steadily gotten worse. Of course have looked at the obvious stuff......

Running XP, all updates on DSL with a Linksys router. The computer doesn't lock up, or crash, no other flaky activity besides this.

She has a laptop with a wireless connection to the router and hasn't had any problem on that.

Kinda stumped on this one, could it be a bug of some sort? Corrupted registry?

Thanks for any time you devote to this question!!

You've probably tried this (based on your statement of doing the obvious), but have you purged the cache in the browers? When you do it in IE, make sure you delete all offline files. I've seen that help when there are random issues.

I also assume you scanned for adware/spyware/malware with a couple of different apps to make sure the system doesn't have something on it.

Standardize on firefox---use ie only for updates---in firefox---go to cookie manager---and allow sessions cookies from ebay----go to password manager---delete any automatic log in entries for ebay---Hardin is right--clean the cache and increase its size----check your sun java---update to the latest version jre 1.5.0.7. and delete all old versions.---a copy of iespyads will lock down ie if thats the problem

Also some firefox extensions can cause weird problems---and so can a corrupt profile.---and again Hardin is right---Malware can cause this also.---go to Castle cops or spyware warrior to learn how to remove and then defend your PC from new intrusions.

If you suspect a corrupt registry---download a free copy of regseeker---its scarily agressive---but has never screwed anything up for me.---and it backs up automatically

Hello

Thanks for all the input, I appreciate it. Everthing seems to be working okay now. I did finally get her convinced to use Firefox. She gave me some wrong info about the problem being with both browsers, It was just with IE.

I did a full scan with some spyware programs, only thing that came up was some tracking cookies and had data miner by them so got rid of those.

I also ran registry mechanic on it and cleared up some problems found by that program, I've had great luck with it also.

I tried to log into the router to check some things but for some reason I couldn't get logged on. 192.168.1.1 gave me the username and password and I put admin in the password box but still wouldn't let me in.

I installed the router awhile back and didn't ever log into it, so I assume the default log in would stay the same, I guess you can reset the router to get the default login again....

Thanks again!!
