Good observation, tigerbait.

Nonetheless...both are incredible deals for $50, although I know for a fact the 610 is newer, although the 636 may be a better scanner.

610 is sold out at CompUSA.com, but 636U is still in stock. The same happens at local stores.

If 636U is better, some of you can still get in this deal.

Why is 636U faster than 610 and 640U(according to Epson website)? Is that a typo?

I'll be at school whole day tomorrow. Here is the phone number:

Scans quicker?
BS. Show me proof. The 610 is a generation later.

For the 610, from: http://files.support.epson.com/pdf/perf61/perf61sl.pdf

Scanning Speed (A4, 600 dpi, draft mode):
Color 16msec/line

For the 640U, from http://files.support.epson.com/pdf/per64u/per64upg.pdf

Speed (A4, 600 dpi, draft mode):
Color 16msec/line

For the 636U, from: http://files.support.epson.com/pdf/perf6u/perf6usl.pdf

Scanning Speed (A4, 600 dpi, draft mode):

Color 8.1 msec/line

Why is there this belief that a succeeding generation within a product line must be faster than a previous one? Looks like Epson is positioning its product lines downward and making them cheaper. The 610/640U looks like a lower entry-level Epson. The 1240U is slightly slower and more cheaply made than the 1200U, but it's really meant as a replacement (price-range wise) for the 636U. The 1640SU takes the position the 1200U used to have.

Couple of things (having just picked up a 636U at CompUSA):

1) The "generation later" thing doesn't always mean an improvement, like the data in stroligo's notes.

2) The 636 was the SOHO model; the 610 was aimed at the consumer market. That's why the 636 has an option port for the automatic document feeder and transparency adapter and the 610 doesn't. It's also probably why the rated scan speed on the 636 is higher than the 610.

3) I wouldn't put a whole lot of faith in C|Net reviews. They tend to gloss over some stuff and sometimes they're flat out wrong. Sometimes those user comments are even more interesting. One of my favorites was one on DirectX 8 which said that users of low end machines like Intel 810 systems should install it because DirectX is a substitute for video RAM.

I just checked w/ Epson tech support and was told that the 636u was a "better" scanner than the 610 w/ better software and driver. He said they both scanned at the same speed. Certainly the 636u is nicer in having an on/off switch that the 610 does not. He had no opinion about a comment I read on a Deja.com forum, that you can use the 640U driver (presumably better) on these earlier models. Anybody try this yet??

So Epson SAYS they both scan at the same speed, while their Web page says they don't?

Why is it so hard to get any info on this thing?

I agree that C:Net reviews can be screwy at times, but I don't doubt their speed tests. I believe them when they say the 610U really was one of the fastest they tested. As to whether or not it's "better" than the 636.... I still haven't heard ANYONE say the 636 is blazing fast, too. So, based simply on the review, I would be more likely to lean toward the 610.

I bought the 636 yesterday from Compusa for 49.97+tax. I scanned a roll of pictures and the results are pretty good. I will give you guys a link when I upload some of them.

I still haven't heard ANYONE say the 636 is blazing fast, too.

How about PC Magazine? Here's a quote from PC Magazine - who I'd trust more than C|Net - and their Editor's Choice comments on the Epson 636/636U from the scanner roundup of the 636U's peers:

For home or small business use, the Epson Perfection 636 (SCSI, $300 street) and 636U (USB, $230 street) delivered outstanding image quality and some of the fastest scan times we've ever seen

Another quote from the review:

The 636U won top honors for image quality on our tests, with a first-place jury ranking for printed gray-scale output and an eighth-place ranking for viewing on-screen. Colors both on-screen and in the printed output were vibrant, and they matched the original reasonably well. The scan of the monochrome test photo retained almost the full dynamic range of the photo from black to white. Just as important, the scans retained even tiny details of the original, which supports Epson's claim to offer better optics than most of its competition. Scan speed was excellent--indeed, both Epson units were among the fastest in the roundup

Both Epsons were also the only two units to rank "Excellent" in all four criteria - Setup/installation, Ease of Use, Image quality, and Speed.

I'm not sure why people are avoiding the 636U. The CompUSA I went to had several 636Us piled up. If they're both the same price I'd easily take the 636U over the 610 - comparable or possibly better performance and the same price, but the 636U has the power button on the front (not at the side or back like most other scanners) plus the option for the ADF/transparency accessories.

So, based simply on the review, I would be more likely to lean toward the 610.

I wouldn't make any purchase based solely on a C|Net review, especially when it's not that difficult to find other opinions. For example, if you check the C|Net 636 review, they mention both TWAIN interfaces but, unlike PC Magazine, they don't say which one they used to rate the scanner even though they say one is better than the other. There's not even a date on the review so you might be able to tell if they're using an older version of the TWAIN driver. They've also been wrong before on scanner reviews, so I don't even bother to check them out for scanner info. Maybe that's why C|Net bought ZDNet.

How about a reference from me?
I've owned a 636U for quite awhile and can tell you it is one fast, accurate scanner. I like it better than any of several scanners I've owned. The price at CompUSA is a steal and I ordered another (don't know what the heck I'm going to do with it!).
Be sure to go to Epson and download the updated drivers and program.

After I saw the post from the person who got a 636U for $49.97, I checked the website, and the 636U was listed at $49.97, too.

I went out to a few CompUSAs, and to make a long story short, the dozens I had seen a few days ago were all gone, and I bought a rain check.

On the way home, I looked very closely at the ad, and saw that there were TWO product codes on the bottom of the ad: #264027/#279750. The first one is for the 610U, the second is for the 636U.

In all my travels, I have not seen a single 610U.

So you can get a 636U for $50.

The 636u and 1200u have a page feeder option. Expensive, but it is available. The 640u and 1240u do not have that option. If you are doing regular OCR you either get a page feeder or you stand there and feed one page at a time.

That PCMag review was done before the 610 and the current crop of scanners came into existance. Look at the date@!

I went to the comp usa in dadeland *im in miami*,
and I ended up with the 636 was told it was better and it was the only one
available, i was in the market for a scanner and 50 bucks doenst squeeze
my college budget that hard especially when i want to get one of those
car cd/mp3 head decks.

The scan quality is as good as my fathers *professional* scsi hp from about three years ago,
he paid about 800 bucks for the thing, and it actually scans faster too Not to mention its 36 bit like most of us even need that much, it works, its cheap stop complaining and get it while it lasts.

to bad all the office depots in miami are outo f the 20 dollar quickcam home deal... ggrr need cdd webcam.. damn cmos thing makes me feel like i spilled milk on my contact lenses.

I just wish they had the 636 and not the 636u, i mean is my aha2930 only going to be used for my upgraded burner *used to be a 2x switched the innards for an 8x and returned it after it broke from one month of use.... *

Do either the 636U or the 610 have drivers for Windows 2000? If so, what editions? Professional, Server or Advance Server.

The 610 better than the 636U?

So why does it get a bargain rating, and the 636U a moderate?

Here's the side by side comparison.

And here are the W2k drivers for the 610 and 636U scanners.
