Thanks for the link Rab. Wonder if the drivers are for all Windows 2000 versions though. I'm guessing it is since there are no indication of the version with the description of the drivers.
Just a quick question. Walmart has the HP 1200UB scanner which can be had for the same $49. ($59 less $10off$50 coupon) How does the the HP scanner compare to the Epson 636U in this thread?
I just got one from compusa at West Nyack, Palisades Mall, NY. They still have a lot of 636Us, probably 25+.
Scanner's excellent, but it seems like its unstable on WinME, or maybe just on my system. They don't have any TWAIN drivers for WinME. Microsoft advised on using win2k drivers, but still no go. Any suggestions?
Thanks, Elemental, great deal! I picked up the 636u a few hours ago and it's great. I have a Relisys (Teco) that was fine but no working drivers for Win2K. I picked up an AGFa E50 open box at BB, and it does work but it's SSSLLLLOOOOOOOWWW, got to get rid of it. This is quick and the scans are great.
One thing, it shows up as an Epson GT-7000 in my control panel. Anyone else get this???
Ejunior2-
In my opinion, epson's are the best overall scanners out there. this scanner normally goes for over 100 bux, so this is a smokin deal! go for the epson 636u, not the hp
Epson Perfection 636U or CanoScan N1220U in the other thread?! The Epson is a much better value, but the Cannon is so sexy and for someone that moves a lot, much easier to carry around. However, Epson has Win2K drivers for all the editions of Win2K and the Cannon only has drivers for Win2K proffessional edition (which I don't use for my primary system with the better monitor). Decisions... decisions....
Personally i like the Epson over the Canon...if ur gonna spend 199 on the 1220U, get the 1200u or the 1240 from epson. These will be much faster, quieter and probably better quality. I just returned my new Canon 650U(the super thin 42bit 600x1200 one) for 2 Epson 636U scanners. haha yeah i got 2!
After i saw my friends 636U's quality and compared it to mine, i felt soooo ripped off. The 636U is much better scanner.
Ive lost so much respect for canon scanners now...ha
Well, the CanoScan N1220U can be had as low as ~$125 according to the other thread. However, it uses the CIS technology rather than the more mainstream CCD technology. The CIS technology was largely considered inferior up till recently. There is no question that the Epson Perfection 636U is better dollar for dollar (better image quality I gathered from what I've read for less bucks), but the CanoScan definitely has the upper hand with its sleek appearance vs. the Perfection's rather boxy appearance... Hmm... any other personal experiences would be helpful.
Anybody having problems running the 636U under WinME, do this:
Remove the following:
ESCANFB (C:\Windows\Inf\)
EPSONESCANFB (C:\Windows\Inf\Other\)
EPFB3CPL.DLL (C:\Windows\System\)
Calibrat (C:\Windows\Twain\)
EPFB3 (C:\Windows\Twain_32\)
Then go to device manager and remove EPSON636U under imaging device
Turn-off scanner
Turn scanner on --> New device detected
Use the Twain Win2K driver found at Epson website (File: TWAINWIN2K340A)
Open Adobe Photscan, go to file , then preferences, and change the Primary to another harddrive letter.
i know, who cares about how the scanner looks, i'd rather save money on the scanner and buy better stereo equipment for my room, but you can't do much with 50 bux lol
Got a 636u from a local compusa a couple days ago. One nice thing about this price reduction is that they charge tax on the $49 not the original $100 price. Very nice scanner. Much, much quicker and w/ a better twain interface than the Microtek X6 parallel port scanner it is replacing. The button manager works well. I can scan right into photoshop w/ one button. Also you can associate a color space, an ".icm", w/ it, something I could not do w/ the Microtek. Be sure to d/l the latest driver from Epson. All in all, well worth the dough!
If Anyone is interested.
I badly want this scanner/Deal.
636U is what i'm looking for.
If ANYONE is kind enough to pick one up and send it to me regular post to CANADA (vancouver BC)
I would gladly pay $70USD shipped for your troubles.
$20 might not be lots. But pretty easy for you guys to make a short trip.
This is a great deal. I just picked mine up. I scanned a color picture (4 x 6) in less then 6 seconds perfectly.
The only drawback so far is, I have to turn it on before I turn on my PC, or I get blue screens of death. EEK
DeadheadZZ, I don't have that problem w/ my 636u (OS=98se). I can turn it on any time and it works fine. Did you d/l the latest twain driver from Epson? That might explain the difference. Maybe not?
Alright! Scored an Epson Perfection 610 scanner, the floor model for $25, only had the power cable and that was it. They didn't have any 636u's in stock or any other 610's, so I asked for the floor model, and the manager gave me $25 off. I bought an open boxed 10' USB cable too for another $10.
I was perfectly happy with my Umax Astra 1220U scanner up until recently when I found out there was no Win2K support available. I've always wanted an Epson scanner (worked with them all the time at school) and now I have one!!! SWEET!!!
dcdomain, before you scrap the 1220, I though the same about my 1600U but found out a later model driver would actually work in Win2K for that model. It seems that part of Astra's planned obsolesence is to not let customers know there are working drivers. I'mnot saying there is a driver that will work with your's but it might be worth a little research.
DOH! Yeah, just checked out the response on this thread I started over at peripherals... oh well, always wanted an EPSON anyway, I'm giving the Umax to my sister.
