CDR(w) that was fully compatible with CloneCD could be
used to copy any existing CD. In that case, there are a whole
bunch O' CDR(w) units that'll do this.

Or are there CDs that cannot be copied, even by fully CloneCD
compatible drives?

kwad that is correct

there are 2 new cd protections out that clone cant backup
securom version 2 and safe disc version 2

but securom version 2 has been fixed with clone cd 2.8.3.1 but safe disc 2 requires special burners like iomega

rid of the Plextor/Imation 8x20 SCSI drive, now that the Sanyo/
Smart & Friendly 12x4x32 drives are CloneCD compliant. But now
it's gonna stay part of the family

How many CDs are actually using SD2 technology? Does this mean that we will all have to buy new bunners to keep up with the times?

For what I understand RA2, Hitman, and new EA titles are using SD2. So far, the only burners that can bypass SD2 are the Iomega 8x4x32x (think it's a rebadged phillips), Some plextor 8x20x and I think one of the older mitsumi models. Everything else either copies it only to be playable on the cdrw that burned it (iomega 12x4x32x, I used this to back up my RA2) or not at all (any sony models). Hopefully there will be another version of CloneCD out that can break SD2 with all compatible burners.

Not Anything Mitsumi

I had an old 2xwrite 8xread IDE mitsumi drive from January of 1998.

That drive would not do DAO
It was not compatible with cdrwin
it was not compatible with clonecd

I think it was the first Mitsumi CDR available on the mass market ..
