ok ultraknowledgable people, I gotta put in my $.02 worth of questions here...

I have been burning and copying cdroms for ~1.5 years now and I'm looking to upgrade my HP 8110i 4/2/24 burner to something faster and more modern. I need a drive that copies music cds, PC games, and PSX games. ideally, I want to copy anything and everything out there. thus, what is the best overall drive available today? speed is not nearly as important as compatability...

here are the relevant Hot Deals choices, all of which are 8/4/32 drives:
Iomega 31025 from Buy.com : ~$94 [$153.95 - $30 rebate - $30 off 150 coupon]
HP 9110 from Staples.com : ~$70 [$99.95 - $30 rebate]
Plextor PX-W8432TI from Buy.com : ~$117 [$146.95 - $30 off 150 coupon]
Sony CRX140E from Buy.com : ~$99 [$153.95 - $30 rebate - $30 off 150 coupon]

all 4 of these burners are compatable with CloneCD, which I haven't yet tried. I am familiar with Nero, CDRWin, DiscJuggler and BlindRead/Write. from reading this post, the Iomega is good for backing up SD2.0 protected cdroms, but doesn't do well with PSX games. as I don't currently have any SD2.0 games, but I do have a PSX, I don't think this is the drive for me.

thoughts? comments? is there a perfect burner?

I know, the deal is dead. however, I bought the HP 9110i when it was available, so I included it in my list. haven't received it yet though...

golem,
does this mean that in order to backup a disc I can image the disk first using a cdrom that will read subchannels etc, and then write the whole thing to the burner?

citizen12,Yep, if you have a reader that can read subchannels, then you can use that to get the image onto the harddrive and then use the burner to make the CDR. I don't think it will work with Protected PSX becasue this burner doesn't have the option of not correcting incorrect subchannel data. I think PSX games use incorrect subchannel data as the protection. As far as I know, not many PC games use this type of protection

Any comments on Crapito's choices for a "best overall" burner for backing up psx games as well as data and audio cd's.

well, since no one replied to my lengthy post comparing cdrw drives, and since buy.com pulled its $30 off $150 coupons, my decision became simple: the Iomega ZipCD 8/4/32 from Staples.com. I called Staples.com at 800-378-2753 and ordered the following:

$179.98 -> Iomega ZipCD from Staples.com. SKU 435458
$149.95 -> Pricematched with Onvia.com to save ~$30. SKU 2544160
$.01 each -> added (5) MSN Internet Access Kits to get my total up to $150 even, for my coupon. SKU 446430
-$40 -> $40 off $150 coupon from Techbargains.com
$6.40 -> NM sales tax
-$30 -> Iomega & Staples.com mail-in rebate for the drive
$.33 - US postage stamp, for mail-in rebate
net total: $86.73

delivery is expected Thursday 12/14. to make the deal even sweeter, I have a buyer for my HP 8110i 4/2/24 cdrw drive for $70, so I will end up spending <$20 for doubling my cdrw speed and adding CloneCD and SD2.0 capabilities. nice, eh?

To test the capabilities of my drive I tried reading red alert 2 for an image, no go. Either someone was mistaken, or the drive I have is different. While this was disappointing, I am still happy with my drive since it does what I wanted it to anyway, but it's always nice to have the most advanced tech stuff out there.

Anyone else have this drive that may be able to explain what if anything I am doing wrong?

bonkers325,
I tried to make an image file from the iomega, then record back to it. When I checked the log in clonecd for the image, it was sector after sector that it couldn't read. Any suggestions?

My other cd is almost dead, it can't do much of anything so I need to work from an image until I get a good deal on a cdrom.

Thanks

Citizen12,

Have you tried burning the image to a CDR errors and all? Not sure, but I think those errors are supposed to be there. They mark areas of protection and should be be burned as errors on the CDR so that it will work. BTW, used a Tosh DVD to read RA2 and the Iomega 8432 to burn it. CDR works on a iomega 12x4x32, an iomega 8x4x32x and the Tosh DVD. However it will not work on a generic DVD-rom that I also have. The original does work on it however.

Guess I should have thought of that
No offense intended, I was just trying to check the drive since I thought it could read and write. What kind of drive would be best to read with since I do not have another cdrom at this point?

So which one is better for backups?

Iomega ZipCD 12X4X32 or Plextor 12/10/32A?

Will the 12X Iomega do SD 1.0 and 2.0 with CloneCD? what are it's flaws/downsides compared with the plextor?

Thanks!!!

Don't know much about the plextor. But the iomega 12x4x32x is compaitible with CloneCD. However, with Safedisk 2, it can only make copies that work with itself. It does have burnproof tho.

Holy Canoly, what is this, Clone Clinic???!!!
Look what you did Steve, it's turned into a tech support forum for CCD! **joking**
Fellas, if you want better and quicker answers, go to "The Clinic", it's got tons of stuff to quench your new found interest in CCD.

*edit* After looking at the dates I retract my smartass remarks, guess I'm a week behind the times. *edit*
