Don't get fooled by the $1.25 each or $125/100 discs with free shipping from CD-Recordable.com. Don't get fooled by the advertisements, the cover, or the fancy looks of those DVD-R and DVD-RW.

The DVD-Rs from CD-Recordable.com sucks badly. They are extremely poor quality. Non of them played thoroughly on the entire length of each movie without glitches and or pauses. I have tested (watched the entire movie) the DVDs on my Pioneer DV-S10A (Japanese model ONLY, small brother of the ~$5000, DV-AX10) and the Sony DVP-S9000ES (GOLD, code-free Hong Kong model).

Before buying a large quality of DVD-Rs, buy a couple of each brand to try out how well they do on your home DVD Player. Some might play well, some might not. It all depends on your home DVD player.

I am currently using the Pioneer DVR-A03 (103) and the DVR-A04 (104) retail model drives.

I have found that the blood-red dye DVD-R works pretty well with my players. So far i have found no glitches and pauses with these discs. Here are some brand that is good, but you dont have to agree with me. Princo, Ritek, PrimeDisc and 2 generic brands are pretty good without problems. Please note, the players i have (might not make a difference) are $1500 and $1050, respectively.

The cheapest DVD-R i found goes for $1.29, $1.35, $1.38, $1.59. DVD-RW are $1.59, $1.89 and $1.99.

TDK, Pioneer, Maxell or any of those super name branded DVD media are probably made by or rebadged by one of the following: Princo, PrimeDisc, MeritLine, Ritek, DVDPro, RiData, (too many to list) and Generics.

Sorry, i just had to say all that after reading a few threads on DVD-R / RW.

Here is the Super Flaming Hot Deals for DVD-R / RW and DVD+R / RW.

Nice post, but...I have gotten 3 shipments of the dvdr-s from CD-Recordable, about 150 all. All of them have played in my desktops and all 7 of my dvd players, Panasonic-Pioneer (the best) and Apex. Hey, they even work on my friends players. I haven't wasted a single disk.

Call me a Happy Camper. For more comments on people who actually use them, go to Dooms site.

Thanks vfdfs2, wish I'd seen this before I bought: PrimeDisc DVD-Recordable 4.7GB 25 pack (General Purpose) at shop4Tech.com for $59.99 when I bought my Pioneer DVR-104. That's about $2.40 each. :| The disc is silver on top and purple on the bottom. I haven't used any yet.

vfdfs2: which media are you talking about that has the gold shiny top and blood red dye on the bottom?

everyone:
how about being more specific on the model and brand of the players you using to test them on?

I have ordered DVD-R medias from CD-Recordable.com a couple of times, 100 discs per order in the past and the near past. The discs are all the same, past and present, light purplish color dye with a scratch-resistant, metalic-like (pattern of small white spec) color on top.

They were the cheapest at the time, about $3.59 each (Oct.2001) to $1.99 (Mar.2002). At first, i thought that my players (at that time, Sony DVP-S7700 and Pioneer DV-737 (US Pioneer Elite DV-37), both Gold, Hong Kong model, region-free) were not DVD-R compatible. It turns out that it wasn't the players (after 2 players and 2 current ones) or the DVD-R authorings. It was the damn medias that caused the glitches and pauses.

The best generic DVD-R media i 'm currently using has a gold shinny top (like those OLD cheap, shinny, easy-to-scratch, silver-top CompUSA CD-R) with a bloody-red dye. They are about $1.59 each. Price has gone up, $1.79 since i got a batch of a 100 last month. They are generics.

Everyone, please state what player(s) you are using to test DVD-R medias with. Don't just give out a name, please include a model.

How do you testing, play your DVD-Rs? Play a minute of it to see does it work or not or play the entire length? The glitches and pauses occurrs 10 minutes into playing time, then its barely unwatchable.

They are generics. I got a second batch of a 100 from another site/vendor. Again, they have a blood-red dye but with a white-matted top instead. I got this batch from (will update when i find the link).

I actually just picked up the 104 Drive by pioneer, and I also got a spindle of 25 generic DVDR's. I picked the drive up from jazztechnology.com as well as the discs from there. I believe they were these discs. So far I have only burnt 1 of them and I burnt it at 1x. The game I burnt was Medal of Honor Frontline for PS2.

When I put it in, it played perfectly. It did not skip, load slowly, or anything like that. I have played through 3 levels and its no problems at all. I have 2 other PS2 DVD-R titles I picked up a while back. I have soul reaver 2 which is on Pioneer DVDR media, and it works fine. I have 2 copies of Tekken 4. 1 is on a wierd looking topped/blue backed generic, and 1 is on a Mitsui. The one burnt on the generic works pretty badly. Skips sometimes, freezes sometimes, and also has slower load times. The one on the Mitsui works flawalessly.

So I think that the burnin at 1x will really help out. My generic at 1x works fine for Medal of Honor while the generic for the Tekken 4 doesn't work so hot. I actually trashed it since my other copy works fine. I know the PS2 is very picky with the lasers because sony gives them crappy lasers. The best thing I can say is to test out different media and see what works best for you, and to burn at 1x also. As far as xbox goes, I am waitin for the enigmah chip still to come out and until it does I won't know. But supposedly it plays "All Backups of XBOX games will boot flawlessly" and you can "Can use cheap unbranded general purpose DVDR media" as thats quoted from the official enigmah site.

Hi,

I burn them to DVD-rw first. Then I go thru the chapters, and usually watch the first 10 minutes or so. It is easy for me as I have a tv and standalone dvd player within arms reach while I tinker on the puter.

My Pioneer 535 and 333 work fine with them and the Apex 600 and 660 and 1500 work too.
I think as better and faster dvd-r and the other formats continue to come out along with better and cheaper media, we all will benefit.

I posted a better deal a few days ago for cheaper prices and HP brand media for DVD+R and DVD+RW, here is a repost:

05/29/2002 4:02 AM

Link to DVD+R at $3.86

http://www.thenerds.net/productpage.asp?c=48&pn=678432&sd=&d=&m=HEWLETT+PACKARD+-+DVD+WRITER+KX

Link to dvd+RW at $5.79

http://www.thenerds.net/productpage.asp?c=48&pn=348109&sd=&d=&m=HEWLETT+PACKARD+-+DVD+WRITER+KX

btw DVD+R disks are now very cheap and the DVD+R and dvd+RW does alot things the other formats don't and some things faster.

Also there is a bitset utility to change the bit type DVD drives recognize these disks to DVD-ROM which greatly increases their readibility in different DVD drives for playback of video or reading of data or whatever is on the disk.

If the picture on that link you provided is indeed the look of that DVD-R, then i would say i bought and experience them before. The brand i got was DVDPro. I have provided a link to the DVDPro for comparsion to yours. Also, please give a comment to the second link about this Super Name Brand DVD-R. Which "generic" brand does it look like?

Link

Link #2

I burned them with the Pioneer A03 @ 2x speed. Play 5 minutes of the movie, fine, 10 minutes into the movie, glitches and pauses occur. ~30 minutes into the movie, pauses and skips. By this time, the movie was unplayable.

I still dont think there is a definitive answer on which dvd-r media plays in xbox, ps2 and most stand-alone dvd movie players. I would like them to be fairly cheap as well. Can someone provide some insight, thanks.

vfdfs2: I think your problem with your discs is you are burnin at 2x. I know for a fact from doin research that the a04 (104 is the OEM drive of the a04) is compatible with ALOT more media at 2x than the a03 is. But again, I burnt my discs at 1x not 2x, AND I have the 104. I burnt only 1 ps2 game so far. I am working on getting a 2nd one. I will try it again at 1x and will let you know how it turns out. But so far, the first one I burnt works perfectly. I couldn't ask for better. I played through the first 3 levels, which are full of music and voices and sounds, and it has not skipped once. On top of that, there hasn't been any slow load times (as I have experienced with another generic DVD-R disc). My only suggestion would be to burn at 1x and not 2x because I seriously believe that makes a difference. I know it did for CD-R drives. With my older 8x drive and the older media, I couldn't get a psx game to work if i burnt it at 8x. Now I can burn em at 12x and they work fine.

And as far as the picture of the media in the link I provided, that is exactly what my spindle looks like. I am at work now so I can't check on the brand and stuff, but the spindle itself, and the disc color looks just like that one in the link I provided. Again I have only burnt 1 dvdr so far so I can't remember exactly what it looks like. But I'll check when I get home later and leave a reply on here.

I'll give it a try at 1x on the A03 and A04 to see if it does make that difference. I'm pretty sure it does. However, burning at 1x means i have to wait 2hrs to make 1 lonely movie.

I've been experiementing with DVD-Rs for nearly 9 months, almost 700 discs.

I'll let you know how it turns out.

Thanks for the information

TDK, Pioneer, Maxell or any of those super name branded dvd media are probably made by or rebadged by one of the following: Princo, PrimeDisc, MeritLine, Ritek, dvdPro, RiData, (too many to list) and Generics.
I believe Princo makes their own, and I have had no luck with these. The few that I have tried are suck. Completely unreliable.

Apple media (at $5 a shot) are excellent. I also have a local source for generic media which is much more reliable and much cheaper than the Princo I have tried.
