Since this is an HP OEM drive, the firmware probably identifies it as such. But you can go to the Plextor site and download the BIOS upgrades which should turn it into a "pure" Plextor drive. I had the same problem with a Plextor 32X SCSI drive which has IBM firmware; but the BIOS in that drive can only be upgraded by replacing a chip that is soldered to the board.

EDIT: Can anyone who receives this confirm that the 40X can be firmware flashed to a true Plextor 40X for compatibility with DiscDupe 2000? (software that comes with retail Plextor drives which I already have)

Hi all.
I just received the drive and the speakers today.
The drive's firmware is labeled as an HP CD40x. I tried to flash it with the firmware updates on the Plextor site but none of them work. They all return PX-40 not found. I suppose they check the firmware on the drive before they try to flash it. So if anyone knows of a way to flash this puppy I would love to know. I had the same problem with the Imation 8x20 (if any of you got in on the deal from Best Buy about a year ago) when we tried to flash it. Someone came up with a crack (or tweaked Plextor upgrade) of some sort and we were able to flash the drive. If that person can help us out again, that'd be great.

BTW, the Altec speakers are the blue iMac looking ones. Pretty kewl.

a little update to silvrback's post.

i didn't try to update the firmware for the drive but it does come with the latest 1.11 firmware so there is no need to update right now. also the drive only ships with one jumper so if you need to change scsi id you'll need some more.

also i little off topic but does anyone know if sync transfer should be check under properties?

I got mine today. I wish I had ordered two sets. This is such a sweet deal!

The speakers are very good. I have ACS66i, which I got from Buy.com a few weeks ago for $20. The technical specifications of these two models are exactly same. ACS340 has Bass and Treble controls on satelites, which is very nice.

Any audio experts here care to comment on the difference between ACS340 and ACS66i?

I just received shipping confirmation and a tracking number...probably be a few days before I receive it from cross country. I'm pretty surprised they are honoring the price. To the best of my knowledge, Compgeeks is a relatively small, hands-on operation. Seldom do pricing mistakes go unnoticed (or honored) in these situations.

With regard to the firmware, it's probably easy enough to change the ID string in the binary code with a hex editor (so it matches the HP string). However, I think that would only allow you to use Plextor's firmware update, not actually modify the ID string on the drive. I'll look at it a little more closely once mine arrives.

As I remember Lotsamula came up with a binary that would change the Imation 8X20 burner so it was recognized as a Plexy. I don't think he wrote that, but maybe we can get in touch with him and have the guy that authored it do the same for this HP unit.

That worked great! After the change you could download the Plextor firmware and the only way you could tell the unit wasn't a Plextor was because of the label on the face of the tray. It worked perfectly with Plextor DiscDupe, and other Plextor software, including CDResQ.

If you come up with, or hear, of a rebadger that works please post it.
I will do the same if I find one.
