This sounds like a great deal for all you guys. I have the Imation/Plextor 8x20 and still love my drive. I still have the link for the guy who had made a dedicated page for the Imation/Plextor 8x20 flash. Possibly he will be able to help you guys with a little program. The link is Plexmation Flash Page and I hope this will help all you guys out.

Still haven't got a tracking number. I'm concerned because I placed the order on Thursday morning. I'll check on Monday.

Floyd, Yaz, and others------

Thanks to Lore I was able to get in touch with LotsaMula

In part here is his reply

If both the HP unit AND the Plextor counterpart are SCSI and are completely identical, then it shouldn't be a problem other than changing a few lines of code in my original program. What I would need, however, is the EXACT ID String of the Plextor unit the HP will be replacing (including spaces), and the exact ID string of the HP if you want me to create an undo utility to change it back to an HP if necessary. You can find out the Plextor ID string by asking someone who has the Plextor drive to watch the boot-up process and record what the Plextor reports as.

I have a Plextor PX40-TSi, but I haven't received my HP unit from the GEEKS, and it won't be here until Dec. 7th. I can probably come up with the Plextor ID string for him, but we need the HP ID string from someone here so that he will have the information he needs to write the utility.

Also, if someone has both units, please verify that the HP and the Plextor PX-40TSi are identical, it would speed things along.

Of course if someone here has both units, please e-mail me the ID strings, and I will forward them to LotsaMula. It may take a little while, but I am pretty sure we will all be able to use the Plextor software with our drives.

Thanks for the help!

Respectfully,

Jim Daniels

Ok, I just opened up the my case to look at the label on the drive. Here is what is says:
Hewlett Packard 5064-7222
Pluggable SCSI PX-40TSi

I booted up the computer and went into the SCSI utility and here is what it says:
HP CD-ROM CD40X

I hope this helps.

keep us informed on how it goes. pls Email me if anyone gets/makes a ID string change for it so we can update the firmware. i got mine a few days ago but does anyone else's HP 40X make wierd sounds like it's trying to read a cd even if there's none in there. when i open/close the tray it makes a wierd spinning sound; same on bootup.

i'd like to know if this is "normal" for plex cd-roms or else i'll need to RMA this baby.

thanks!

I have two true Plextor 40X drives that were purchased new, not
refurbed, not OEM. And both of them make that same "swish" noise
when the computer boots up (as the SCSI card searches for
SCSI devices). It's normal. It also makes that noise sometimes
when a CD is inserted...

Hi all---

This is a copy and paste of the e-mails between LotsaMula and myself yesterday. (Sunday, Dec. 3)

Hi Jim-----8^)

Thank you for your reply and your help!
I have the Plextor PX-40TSi cd-rom in my system, and have asked people on the boards to e-mail me the ID string for the HP CD40X (rebadged Plextor PX-40TSi).

I am not sure if this is what you need in the way of information for the Plextor part of the job, but figure if it isn't you'll know and tell me.

I copied and pasted this directly from my computer. I went to System Information-->Components-->Advanced Information-->Storage and scrolled down to this registry key information:

PLEXTOR CD-ROM PX-40TS
CDROM
Registry Key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\enum\SCSI\PLEXTOR_CD-ROM_PX-40TS__1\PCI&VEN_1000&DEV_008F&SUBSYS_80001092&REV_04&BUS_00&DEV_0D&FUNC_0030
Alloc resources: None
Forced resources: None
Boot resources: None
Filtered resources: None
Basic resources: None
Driver: CDROM\0001
Driver Date: 4-23-1999

If this is the needed info. let me know and I will tell others how to find it for the HP CD40X. If it isn't maybe you can reduce my ignorance and give me additional help.

Thanks again for your help Jim.

Respectfully,

Jim Daniels

Yes, that's the information I need. Get this info for the HP drive. I also
need to know the number of spaces between "HP" and "CD40X" in the ID string.
When I get back from my trip, I'll modify the program for you.

Jim

There you have it guys!
Someone needs to follow up and get this information for me and e-mail it to me, as my HP unit is not due for delivery until the 7th.

Believe me, once these HP CD40X's become true Plextor PX-40TSi's in your system, the value of your purchase will be greatly enhanced---IMHO!

Hi again y'all

Splatt just e-mailed me the string for the HP CD40x, and I sent it to LotsaMula. It will be a few days before the program is written, but I wanted everyone that is interested in this to know that progress is being made, and we all will soon be able to use our drives as REAL PLEXTOR PX-40TSi's

Maybe give this thread a bump ^ from time to time so it doesn't get lost into archived posts.

I'll be sure to post the program as soon as it is available!!

p.s. Here is the ID string that Splatt sent me:

Here's the reg key for the HP cd

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\enum\SCSI\HP______CD-ROM_CD40X____1\PCI&VEN_9004

It appears to be 6 spaces between HP and CD, 1 between ROM and CD40X, and 4
spaces between 40x and 1.

If anyone has a different ID string than this, please e-mail me so we can compare the differences and verify the info.

Thanks again!

thanks for the reply. glad i wasnt the only one experiencing this. i have a imation/plex 8x20 (remember the best buy deal where lotsamula helped us there too hehe) and it does seem to make that swish noise. maybe it's just because it's a cd-recorder than rom.

cant wait till our HP40x becomes tru plextors and upgrade the firmware

Well, got mine today. They should have included more than just one jumper. The drive needs at least two by default according to Plextor's manual settings. More jumpers are necessary in order to change the scsi id as well. Oh well. I would like to flash the bios to Plextor though. Would be nice.

actually it only needs one jumper, but you are limited to only a few ID#'s

000 = ID0 (no jumpers)
001 = ID1
010 = ID2
011 = ID3 (cant do with 1 jumper)
100 = ID4
101 = ID5
111 = ID6

these are set vertically and each "1" represents a jumper. so with only 1 jumper you could have ID#: 0, 1, 2, or 4

btw, the way it is figured out is in binary. someone please correct me if i counted wrong in binary.

lawicd: you counted wrong 101 is 5, and 110 is 6, and 111 is 7 helps that I have a final in Computer Architectures on Thursday so I better know how to count in binary

Does anyone have both units (yet) that can look and see if the drives are physically identical? How about faceplates - are they interchangeable?

I was able to interchange the faceplate for a Pioneer 10x/40x DVD-ROM and HP 10x unit that was a rebadged Pioneer.

The HP logo is painted on the front of the tray. I'm guessing that the faceplates might be interchangeable, but I would think that the trays are not.

hello,

i just got my drive and speakers. just a few things tho...

for whoever was asking, yes, my drive also makes a spin up noise while booting up and such...

but i noticed that my amber light is staying on that says "on/busy" does anybody know if this is normal? when i insert a CD it goes off and the green light comes on. It seems like no lights should be on when there is no CD in the drive? anyway just a concern.

also, does anybody know what the jumper the farthest on the right does? says "eject" or something. maybe someone knows where there is an online manual for this drive. I did not recieve any documentation with my drive.

also, does anybody know what should be checked in the drive's properties? i have disconnect checked, but sync is unchecked. is this optimal settings?

also, my speakers came but there was no green input cable. no loss tho, they only costed me 4$ +shipp. ill prolly go try to pick up a replacement cable from radio shaq or something..

anyway, thanks for the hot deal
