Just a little question for you guys....
What kind of SCSI card did u guys use for this drive 2940??? PCI??? ISA???

I am using a ISA ScSi card for my external 50 pin SYSQUEST 1.5 external drive and my Hp 40x scsi. Does it affect the transfer speed or should I use a pci scsi card like the 2940uw.

The only thing to consider is - does the max transfer speed on the card meet or exceed the cd rom The rom is SCSI-2 which means 20M/s. As long as your card supports it you're fine

I've got a 2940U and 2940W in my 2 systems, but the Plextor happens to be in the machine with the UW. Same difference in both...

Does anyone have the source code to the original program that changes a imation to a plextor. If so I think I would be able to edit it to work with the HP drive.

Any update? This deal cools considerably if we can't update the firmware because none of the programs I want to use it with support it as an HP!!!

Be patient guys, it's in the works. Just a couple of small details to iron out.

Best regards,

how do I get this drive to boot? like with my ide cdrom drive, I would just select "CDROM, C, A" in bios, and it would boot off of a cd (e.g. win2k or linux). Now with this SCSI reader, I tried setting my boot order to "EXT, C, A", and setting EXT to SCSI, and it won't work. I have an Abit BE6 and an Adaptec AIC-7850 PCI SCSI controller. I also have a Panasonic 7503 SCSI writer... do I need to adjust the SCSI ID's or something in the bios for the SCSI controller?

I know this exactly isn't the place, but is anyone willing to BUY this drive off me? Truth be told, I don't know if I want to go through all this trouble after reading all the posts. Anyway, if you do, then PM me and maybe we can work something out. Thanks!

Howdy all------

Just to keep everyone informed, the utility is proving to be somewhat difficult to compile. LotsaMula does not have the HP drive that we are trying to get renamed. So far we have tried 3 times with different ID strings, but the program is still not quite right.

Rather than continue to try to do this hit and miss, I am overnighting both my PX-40TSi and my HP CD40X to him so that he can work on it directly. He should be receiving the drives Wednesday Dec. 13.

It is not 100% guaranteed that the program can be written, but it is more than probable that it can. Both drives are identical, the HP unit even is labeled as PX-40TS, so I am not too concerned.

I don't know for sure, but I am expecting that a finished executable for renaming the HP's to Plextor-------and a reverse proggy to rename from Plextor to HP-----will be finished on Thursday Dec. 14. Patience is a virtue it is said, and we all must exhibit a little-------patience that is-------

At any rate, don't give up on this! I will post just as soon as the perfected proggy is available!

Special thanks to FLOYD for all of his help!

Mmmm, SCSI CD-ROMs are great, I think I'll jump on this one, its too good to be true. But hmmm . . . how cheap can I get them as a standalone product, as those speakers are no good to me. Oh well, perhaps they'll make a good christmas present (I've got the Klipsch ones).

One question . . . I have the Adaptec 19160 Ultra160 SCSI card (68 pin if I remember correctly). Is this SCSI CD-ROM 68 pin or what? I don't wanna end up returning it. I consider myself very well-informed about everything about a computer, but I'm a little fuzzy. My first foray into SCSI territory was with a Quantum Atlas 10K II drive a month and a half(?) ago. Its quite nice, too, if I do say so myself =P

~~~EDIT~~~
Oh crud . . . I just checked and it said it was 50 pin! Oh well, despite the fact that its a great deal I'm not willing to buy a new SCSI card to support it. It would sorta defeat the purpose of saving money. Darn, SCSI cards rip audio nice-an speedy too. Another question: Can the plextor SCSI CD-ROM rip a CD at more than 32x? My TDK is nice =P
jimstone,
If it's possible, have LotsaMula post the source code somewhere. Some of us programmer types might be able to work out the kinks and have the proggy available earlier. I totally understand if he wants to keep the source to himself though. It probably took a lot of time to develop the code.
Thanks,
-sb
Last time I checked at the adaptec page, their Ultra 160 Scsi 19160 Card has both internal 68 pin and 50 pin connectors...
received my drive yesterday, very quick and suprisingly quiet. Only problem I had was Nero would not recognize the drive!!! (it would still read fine, but the data displayed was inaccurate) . I installed the latest version as well, and still no good. HOWEVER, Nero , on their website has a "test" file to download, and burn on a cd rom, then you run it on the reader in question- VOILA', she's recognized !!!
Hi to all-
Due to the Winter Storm that blanketed most of the Southern half of the U.S., the drives I sent LotsaMula were delayed in getting to him. I have tracked the shipment and they are still at the Fed-Ex Sort Facility in Memphis, Tennessee. I should think that with the storms passing that he would receive them today.
Sorry for the delay, as I had thought that the program would be available today.
I will post here as soon as possible, when the parcels arrive and the prog. is written.
Another helping of that Patience please---------
This is my first post so bear with me. I got a little anxious so....
Do yall remember those Imation to Plextor programs? I used a HEX editor to modify the program and actually got it to change my HP to Plextor PX-40TS (thats what it says when I boot up at least). Problem is that I tried flashing the firmware from Plextor's web site and it says PX-40TS not found. The drive works fine and everything. My roomate has the original Plextor PX-40TS and I compared our registry settings and the strings are identical, character by character, space by space. The firmware on the drive is already the newest (1.11), so I just wanted to see if the flash program would recognize it at least and maybe give back an error sayings its already updated. What do you all think?
Well, I opened up Nero. I'm running an older version 5.0.2.4. Before, when doing a CD-Copy, the max my Nero would detect was 32X. Now after the update it detects at 40X. Maybe this is a good sign...
UPDATE -- OK I found the problem.. needed one extra space.. The flash program worked this time.
LINK TO PROGRAM
I ran this on 2 of the HP drives and it was recognized by Plextor's flash program on both. So I think it worked =) Make sure you power down your system after running it. I used Adaptec's SCSI Explorer and the dirve vendor, name, etc all checks out ok. Well use the modded program at your own risk, etc, etc. Kudos to the original programmer of that nice proggy.
