Well I'm usually not one to take risks with my hardware but. I went ahead and tried this with no other feedback and it worked. I had a bit of a scare, I ran the ID updater and rebooted. My SCSI card came up with a blank device where the HP drive should be. Then I shut down and rebooted and it came up as the plextor. I went ahead and updated the firmware and all is good. This looks to the real deal, thanks for the work!

Thanks for posting this deal, Kwad Guy. I didn't really need another CDROM drive, but I gave in and bought one a few days before they sold out of them. UPS just dropped it off.

Has anyone been able to find any information about this drive from HP's website?

What version of Windows were you guys running the ID-string-change program on? Does it work under Windows 2000?

I think the drive was sold only in systems by HP, but you can find all the information you need on the Plextor site.
Thanks andrewfu, your little rebadging program works perfectly, I now have a true Plextor that works great with Nero and Plextor Manager.

I run Win2K.

What I did:

Copy hp2plextor.exe to Win98 boot floppy
Reboot with Win98 startup disk in floppy drive
Run a:\hp2ple~1.exe (gets shortened by DOS)
Say WooHoo..

Turn off computer and/or drive. Restart.

Flash with "firm_up40max_111.exe"

Turn off computer and.or drive. Restart.

Done.

Shouts to the people who put this together!

I'm out.

I use Windows2000, and what I did was made a DOS boot floppy with my Adaptec SCSI driver on it. Then I ran the program and powered off.

Wow, that was easy! Thanks. My system recognizes it as a Plextor and it works with everything.

What's the advantage of updating the firmware?

There no actual benefit to flashing since you are flashing the same version of the BIOS. But at least you knwo you can flash your firmware when a new one comes out =)

rad... before flashing, discjuggler didn't detect my reader... now that i flashed it, it does =D now can someone point me in the right direction to get this thing booting? like for use with bootable cds e.g. redhat, win98, win2k... as I said before, I tried setting my boot order in bios to scsi, c, a, but it didn't work- does this have to do with the scsi ID? I don't know how to get into my SCSI bios because nothing comes up at bootup... I have an OEM Adaptec 7850.

hi there...

a question to the developer (or anyone who used the converter program before). Can you please tell me directions? i understand to execute the program, but I have winME, do i need to be booted into DOS mode to use it? if so, will i need my scsi card's drivers and CDROM drivers installed?

so im thinking here are 2 options:

1) sit here in winME, and run the flash program

2) make a win98 dos boot floppy with scsi and scsi cdrom drivers on it and run the executable from there.

either way should work right? the second way will be a pain in the ass, but ill do it if you dont think the first way will work. To my understanding you cannot flash a bios while in non-real mode.

any suggestions anyone?

thanks for the great stuff my man

mp3phish - the regular 98 boot floppy should recognize the scsi cd rom (mine does w/an adaptec scsi card).

I'll try this tonight =D

Just downloaded the programs and run it. It work perfectly. Now all my program pick up the drive as Plextor. (EZCD, Nero, CDRwin)
Thanks a million!

One quick question. What kind of program do u guys use to extract audio?
I use real Jukebox and the extraction rate is only up to like 5.2x
When I run the text on EZCD on audio read speed it only shows up to 13x.
I see in this post people say they get audio extraction from 13x - 30x.
Can anyone guide me on this one.

Thanks again.

can anyone be more concise on how to create a DOS boot disk under win2k (where to go)? it seems that all i can do is make the installation boot disks... Using a 98 disk just makes my computer hang. any suggests?

Just flashed and it worked great! I was a bit afraid after doing it cause I realized there was no proggy to put it back just in case =D I ran the plextor bios flash and worked like a charm.

Thanks!!!!!!

deebone - the 98 disk should just boot fine - it should find the scsi card and cd rom... Then just run the proggy (make sure you've got it on that or another disk)...

I didn't do the start disk or anything else. All I did was download the program and just run it in Windows. Reboot and voila! System recognizes the drive as Plextor 40TS. Hope I didn't mess up anything. BTW I'm running Windows 98SE.

So now that a few weeks have passed, has anyone encountered any problems after changing the BIOS string from HP's to Plextor's?
