HDTV is a certain resolution, normally 1080i or 720P (no need to get into what i or P means). for a TV to be HDTV capable, it must be able to show, in a widescreen format, 1080 lines interlaced, or 720 lines progressive. 1080i is the more prevalent standard by the way.

a regular big screen cannot be called HDTV capable, if it cannot display at least 1080 lines or 720P. of course this is a loose standard. there are standard shaped TV's (i.e. not widescreen) that claim to be HDTV ready. while they will accept an HDTV signal, and display a nice picture, if it isn't widescreen it isnt' technically an HDTV, more of a EDTV (enhanced definition) because it might have 1080 lines to display, but once it drops into widescreen mode, the black bars on top and bottom take up some of those lines, unless hit has 16:9 squeeze (man, its getting to complicated).

believe it or not, it is actually more complicated than, becuase there are few, if any, tvs on the market that can actually display a full 1920x1080 picture.

Actually, 1920x1080 is 1080p, not 1080i....

Don't go plasma, most of the plasma tv's downconvert the HDTV signal cause they only to 890x780 or close to this. the only good plasma I have ever seen is the 12000 buck yamaha. In five years, maybe but not now. Unless you just want to brag that you have a thin tv.

heh, i suppose it technically is.. but you more or less still need 1920x1080 to fully display a 1080i signal, ya?

That eBuy auction is looking mighty tasty. Anybody ever seen these things in action or know where I can see it in action?

That auction is for refurbed and they don't take credit cards. It is a risk to mail order from onecall.com or abt, let alone an unkown seller. Good luck, hopefully it will be in great shape, I would not take the chance. My $0.02.

I went to Sears tonight looking for a washing machine part. I ended up falling in love with a Panasonic 46" Plasma HDTV. My oh my was that impressive with HDTV Discovery channel goin' on. It could have been mine for only $100 a month... For 56 months!!! :Q

Is the Philips 55PP9302 also a good TV? It's a widescreen 55" and I can get an open box one for $1609. Just want to make sure it's a nice set first as I am debating between a few. Also.. I was watching Discovery chanel at the local store and it was incredible... Do they have a HDTV tuner hooked up? Just wondering if that was an outof the box (after pic adjustments of course) picture I saw on those TVs? I'm new to all this... coming from a 27" TV without Stereo

Never buy an open box tv that has been on display, the contrast and brightness are set too high and has already shortened the life of the CRTS. Check out avsforum.com if you don't believe me.

I ordered my Toshiba Cinema Series 50" Widescreen from OneCall and the first one had a big hole in the back from the shipping company i assume, OneCall told me to not accept it and they sent it back to OneCall, They promptly sent me a replacement and it arrived in PERFECT condition, My friend ordered one at the same time as me and his was fine, So actually i saved 400.00 over a local store and i'm very pleased with my service from OneCall.com.
