The Arrowhead ChumpUSA still has 2. Or at least they did last night. They rang up at $50
each, which was more than I wanted to spend seeing as how I don't have an AP.

Does this card support ad hoc networking (peer-to-peer)? Most other 802.11b cards do- set up a card (perhaps a cheap PCI card) in your pc connected w/broadband, set up the other card in your other pc/PocketPC, then surf wirelessly without the added expense of a dedicated wireless router/access point.

these are the agere/lucent orinoco silver cards these are silver units but that is ok. these are better than the cisco 340 but not as good as the new cisco ones (i beleive they are the 350's)

I think that $50 is a good price for an Orinoco Silver card. I know that I paid more just a couple of months ago.

This sucks if its 50 bucks. Anyhow, I checked with Dallas and they have some in stock. I told my friend to grab them all if they are $20. I need 4 for myself, the rest for the fellow anandtechers. Crossing my fingers.

It will probably re-detect this as a Sony, but you can point it to your Orinoco drivers. The cool thing is that this is an older Orinoco firmware, which supports MAC changing! The newer Orinocos have disabled this ability in firmware. However, if you want the latest and greatest, you CAN re-flash this. The other thread tells about how to do it.

Darnit!! unfortunately I don't have the wireless rotuer. I ws wondering if there was something I could plug into the bakc of hte router that could communicate with the wireless PCMCIA card.

Yes. plug a wireless access point into it, you just might get it to work. Or get a couple of cans, tie a string between tem, then you wouldn't need a wireless nic or access point... hehehehe

just picked up my sony card for 449.99

o well i figured saving because of not having 128bit eyncrption isint a big deal.

now as for performance i will see whne my new compaq 2701us comes in

Just picked up the card for $49.99. It definitely is a rebadged Orinoco Silver. I own the Orinoco Gold and this card is made identically (except for the external badging and the 40-bit encryption).

$50 bucks is a good deal in my opinion. Haven't hooked it up yet, but I can tell you the range on my Orinoco Gold is excellent within my home. Floor to floor and room to room, I haven't experienced the dropouts I did with competitive offerings. I've even been able to work wirelessly from my back yard.

I think the $19.99 a few others are posting are regional. If for any reason the price does drop, I'll try to go back and get a price adjustment.

EDiT: Thanks for the reply. Dumb question: would I ever need to change the MAC if I am running NAT on a router?
