This one just blew me away. The wireless pcmia card is by Sony, but it's compatable with ALL wireless networks and ALL notebooks. In other words, you don't have to have sony stuff to use this card.

It's at CompUSA. The normal price is $150, but they're being discontinued. Web price is $50. Here's the online price. SKU # 282097

In the computers, the retail price is $29.99. It rings up as $19.99 at the register.

By the way, these cards are in lockup, so you have to ask for one out of lockup. It's the Sony Vaio wireless PCMIA LAN card.

You will NOT find a better deal than this on ANY wireless LAN card, much less a Sony.

P.S. By the way, the web page says 150 feet line of sight, but on the box it says 300, through walls and floors. The web also says "compatable with Vaio notebooks," but it's compatable with almost any notebook.

If you have a wireless linksys router, you could.

The other thread pointed out that this was a pretty crappy card with very little range. Some say as little as 30ft. from the access point.

sh!t, i just came back from CUSA, didn't find any of those closeout books:|
regarding the wireless stuff, either you need a wireless router or a wireless access point along with a regular router.

Not sure about the Linksys line, but with the SMC Barricade (SMC7004AWBR), the router and wireless access point are combined into one unit. I have one and it works very well. According to the other thread, these are Orinoco Silver cards. If this is true, this would indeed be a very hot deal if you could find one.

Actually, this is an Orinoco card, which I consider the best(next to the expensive Cisco ones). This is only 40-bit(silver) but as petekim pointed out, if you're worried about security, WEP isn't the way to go. You're much better off putting the WAP outside of your firewall and VPNing in.

Besides, if you aren't happy with the range, this is one of the few cards that has an external antenna jack.

Anyone confirm the $20 price? I bought one Saturday for $50, and will go PM if that's true.

Just got one for $50. These things (and win xp pro) are amazing. All I did was take it out of the box, plug it in and win xp pro recognize it, installeds it and configured it. Took a total of 30 sec.

Hey EDiT.. how do you know this is an Orinoco card? And if it is, I guess it is equivalent to the Orinoco silver?

Also, since you already are using one, does this unit work seamlessly like an Orinoco (meaning if I already have Orinoco drivers installed, do I need to worry about reinstalling)?

Could you please post a receipt with the $19 price. Does anyone know if CompUSA price matches other locations. I would really appreciate it.

Yes, could someone post a reciept for the $19.99 price? I went to CompUSA yesterday, and the guy looked it up on the terminal. Still showed $49.88. Also, don't clearance prices at CompUSA end in .88? If so, why is the price not $19.88?

I believe this was just a local deal that only FSU got. I check the CUSA in my area and it's still 49.88 with approx 4 instock. Didn't buy any. If it was $20 would have bought the lot. Also no books and no DC game... made a trip for nuthing!
