it is not..
its a big complaint right now because thousands of e740 owners are left with a 1 year old PDA that isn't upgradeable to PPC2003.

Luckily I got a good deal on mine.. but many others paid upwards of $500 for it less than a year ago.. and in comparison to all other brands who now have PPC2003 upgrades....

check out brighthand forums for more details.

Toshiba posted that they will definitely NOT be releasing Windows Mobile 2003 for the e740.

Just got an e740 a few weeks ago (it was affordable!) So unfortunate that they're not releasing Win Mobile for it. I did hear that some Compaq EUU3 worked on the e335, so for those with that Toshiba, look out for possible working flashes from other companies.

I'd stick with the axim just cause it has WM2k3 once it gets more mainstream, it'll be worth any performance dif. IMO

I'm thinking about getting a PDA, but I can't really justify that unless there's a high chance that I'll be actually using it. What are the practical uses for such a thing, beside the obvious one (appointments/tasks management), which I can't really imagine myself using a PDA for, for that I'm such a "free" living being and that my job doesn't require any organizing at all

I posted about this in OT but didn't really receive much responding... pleeeaase?

Some people live and die by their PDA. I don't. I'm more like you, I think. I have real deadlines and tasks like most people, but often set my own schedule. My job forces me to be flexible and I move the "deadlines" around as needed. To be honest, I don't know what's on my schedule tomorrow.

I bought the Handspring Visor last year when there was a "deal" on it for $40. It is a very entry level unit, but I have not even begun to use it to the extent that it can be used.

I keep it in-sync with my calendar at work. I keep many phone numbers and names in it. I keep an encrypted password list in it. I turn it on maybe twice a week.

Start with a cheap unit to see if you'll use it. I'm tempted to get one of the new 802.11b wireless PDAs, but I know that it would really just be a "toy". I don't need anything other than the $40 Handspring Visor. You can probably get a Handspring Visor for $20 or less on eBay!

Cheers!

Sorry, but I'm gonna have to go with the word of hundreds of people on Toshiba-PDA-dedicated forums over the assurances of some noob. I also find it interesting that I called Toshiba within the past week and they said no such thing. In fact, they pointed me to their "trade-in program" which would let me buy an e755 at a slight discount.

One other thing: if you'd been around the hot deals forums a little longer than a week you'd realize that most folks on AT and FW got this PDA in December for $70 AR/PM/BVG. That's the only thing that eases the insult.

BOTTOM LINE - Avoid Toshiba PDAs

Nah, there is no point for me to start out with a cheaper unit. I'm not looking to organize my life with a PDA. I'm not the kind of person to use Outlook, ever

To give you an idea of how I would use my PDA, consider what I use my PC for: Gaming, surfing the web, email, IM, IRC, listening MP3s, browsing images and watching videos (NOT necessaily pr0n... ) Will I be able to do ALL of those (albeit on a smaller, but still practical scale, of course)?

In a sense, I really want a "pocket pc."

i've found out that with the axim i can get wireless internet- i can play movies- over 6 hours of nonstop mp3s... chat on msn- post in forums..... play Gameboy Advance roms and SNES roms- there's addons to turn it into a 2.1mpx camera or a add on to turn it into a wireless phone (sim card ready).... i can use it to remote control any infrared device like tv's and stereos.... i can upgrade memory through either Compact Flash or SEcure Digital--- so over a gig of storage..... read ebooks because it has one of the top rated screens--- i can take notes on it (even easier with added on keyboard)- check email---- and a whole bunch of other stuff-

I would have bit, but I want 2k3 and my guess is they aren't gonna release it no matter how many people complain.

In that case, I'd bet you'd find a PDA a lot of fun. It would make a cool toy. If I do buy one of the more powerful units some day, it will be more for the "toy" related features and high-coolness factor as opposed to actual usefulness. Have fun!

Right now I'm waiting for my Cingular contract to expire in December or rather for them to offer unlimited GPRS access like Tmobile does. Not that I'm a loyal Cingular fan, but I really would love to keep my #. What happened to that would-be law about taking "your" # with you when you switch carrier?

Oh and... any links to good sites that deal with phones and PDAs?
