SBC just lowered there DSL rates. For people currently under a contract if you reup for a one year contract from the date you change it you can get the updated rates. You no longer have to have the "all long distance plan". For those of you who say its slow...well it is compared to some of the fast cable systems. For example, i am able to get Insight Cable where i live but its 45.00 a month. I don't notice a difference most of the time unless im downloading big files which isn't very often. It actually has less packet loss than insight but it doesn't have the bandwith. I use to get 400KB/s from insight. I get about 150KB/s with SBC on the express package but like i said i really don't notice unless im downloading huge files. Online game play is fast. Considering this is less than some companies charge for dial up its pretty hot. Here is the link to the article:

Ya Darth i asked them my sister in law was in your situation. The CSR told me that my sister-in-law could call and her one year contract would start from the date she switched over to the new pricing plan.

When i was paying 26.95 my bill with "basic" local which didn't include anything like caller id or anything like that was under $50..i think more like $45.00

Sweet deal... Now I just need to convince my parents that it is worth the additional $10 over dialup so I don't have to mooch off the neighbors broadband when I visit! Trying to fix their PCs over dialup is no fun at all.

You end up paying more (local line) than you would for Cable, which is a faster connection. Not hot IMO.

I just called SBC and at first, they refused to adjust my account.

After mentioning that I am a loyal customer who just renewed about 3 weeks ago, the CSR placed me on hold and when she came back, said she would adjust my account.

My old price was: $26.95
My new price: $19.95

(WOO-HOO!!!)

Thanks OP!!!

Called them this morning to get broadband again, the rep told me about this march promo. Thought about getting pro (3MB), but express (1.5MB will do. You'll have to $13 for the self install kit. Takes a week to get the DSL line activated.

My local line fee is $5/month.

What's the point? Don't you have to have a cable subscription as well?

My SBC landline in LA is < $20/mo for unmeasured service. If you pay per call (message units), you can get it cheaper. It's important to get a long distance carrier like www.everdial.net or www.primustel.com that includes local toll calls or SBC will ding you a lot for cross-town phone calls. As for DSL, my basic plan gets me 1.2Mbps down, since I'm less a mile from the switch.

I will call to get the cheaper contract. They were good about my switching the last time they lowered the rate. I'm paying $29/mo now, as I don't have the LD and wireless package.

Well, I don't know how you guys did it, but I just tried changing my $26.95 SBC DSL service to the $19.95 rate, and have gotten a run-around lasting nearly an hour. They say to get that rate I have to have a bunch of other residential services that would cost me an extra $30/month over what I pay now. The ad doesn't say anything about other services, so this is getting to piss me off.

No, in most places you don't have to subscribe to cable TV in order to get cable Internet.

If you already have (or need) a standard local phone line, then this is a much better deal than cable. If not (like me) then my 3Mbps cable line at $40 per month with no cable TV subscription is a better deal (and faster) than the DSL plus phone line would be at $50+ per month...

Keep in mnd that it is up to 3 Mb/s and 1.5 Mb/s speeds, respectively. Just a warning to many that the pro package VERY rarely gets anywhere close to the 3 Mb speed... I have it and my current downstream speed is 1.7 Mb/s. Won't be renewing that contract....

And no you do not have to have cable for it. The fee is $5 more a month if you are not a Time Warner cable subscriber though.

Depends how close you are to the CO or RT and line conditions. Another big factor is the condition of the internal house wiring.

Most people should run a new line from the outside gray box to the DSL modem inside their homes.

All that factored in their is no reason why a phone line can't carry 5.2 megabits with the fastest package 6000/768 which is available from other DSL providers.

PS: Just because you have had bad luck or didn't run a new line to the modem in your home doesn't means others won't.
