I don't see all of these, so when my step-daughter said that the Creative Zen Nano Plus was not what she wanted, I had to sigh.

She wants the ability to scroll the menu like iPod's do. I am still a little leery of iPods after the battery issues (history - I knew about it 1 year before they finally got sued - not too excited about Apple's handling it.) But, if you guys tell me Apple finally has their act together, I might consider it. But her price range puts it in the Nano range and they still scratch easily, right?

I will pay $70 for her. She has to make up the difference.

Archos has one, but the latest reviews at Newegg are really bad (hardware change around March?)

MSI Mega Player 536 - 4GB @ $140? Creative's 4GB? They have the larger screens, but do they offer scrolling menus?

What do you folks think?

You could take a look at the Creative Micro/Micro Photo. They're probably really cheap now, as they're outdated, but they're still great players. The Micro is quite small for a hard drive player and has an interface much like an iPods.

It sounds like she really wants the Nano, so she might as well get the $149 Nano.

Your priorities are a little too rational. She'll be happier about being cool than she will be about having more than 1GB on there ... and regardless, there aren't many people who are going to actually be using even the full 1GB. Given how much music people listen to and how easy it is to sync up, 1GB is probably the most reasonable size.

Yeah, they scratch, but she'll be happy to accessorize it with one of the 9 billion different case options they have. And the black ones are the ones that show the scratches really easily.

I wouldn't worry too much about the battery, either. They're going to have some new better iPod before the battery on that one dies, and it'll probably be available in pink.

nano. think u can get battery service if you send it back in and pay 50? 60? i forget. i'mnot sure if the nano is user serviceable like the other ipods. those have battery kits sold only for around 30-40 bucks that come with battery/tools/video instructions. nano seems too small to fiddle with. but i'm just guessing. and yes, something that will be a joy to use is something that wont get tossed aside.

just get her a nano. true the battery isn't replacable; atleast not easily, but it is a good player. and as Tostada said, there are thousands of cases out there. just get here the white one cause the black one shows scratches better. and the Creative Micro/Micro Photo won't be good as they are hdd based. get her the 1GB nano, buy a good case and let her enjoy the superior UI.

Thanks guys. And for the record, I filled 1GB within an hour and had to trim my list a lot (currently holds 170 songs).

On the battery, the service was ~$100. The court settlement provided $50. Any new devices would not be part of the settlement if it is worded as they usually are. The original iPod battery would last a year and then die.

Oh, the other thing is I am going to have to show her a workflow to change her files from wma for an Apple. sigh.

The new Sansa e series by Sandisk is pretty decent I hear. It can play videos, longer battery life, fm tuner, voice record, scratch resistant, you name it. One bad thing is the audio quality, which is why I stay away from it. If you don't really care, and you are just going to use the earphone that comes with the player, then definitely consider it.

it's for his step-daughter, so i doubt she'll care. i know people who listen to music in 96kbps and they tell me their music sounds great. pfft!!

anyway Sandisk Sansas are great players, as are creative micros. but it seems like your step-daughter would really want a nano; i hate to say it, but you should probably get a nano.
