Hey all... i just got an MSI 9800 pro with the r360 core... runs perfectly overclocked to xt speeds... im sure i can push it well past xt speeds... i was looking at fow to flash the bios to xt and as far as i can tell it requires me booting into dos and i have no idea how to do that with xp pro sp2... is it even possible? i dont even have a floppy drive.... so unless u can boot cd or flash drive... but anyways, does anyone know if there is an easier or better way to flash? i was using rajakpot's website or some name like that... im not really sure... thanks

The first and last card i tried to flash ended up dieing on me. A waste of a perfectly good 5900 Ultra. Don't do it.

P.S. - this belongs in the video forum.

I'd do it if I had an R360 core on my 9800 Pro. Clock for clock, the XT is faster due to minor tweaks ATI made to the R360.

But is it worth a voided warrantty? No.

Is it fun? Yes.

Are free performance increases nice? Hell yes!

Apart from what megatomic said, you can also monitor the gpu temp after flashing..

In this thread you told the guy it was simple to flash before you posted this one. LOL!!!!

That is not necessarily correct!
In addition to R360, you need additional components on the card to activate the temperature monitor. Those components may not be on his card.

this is the guide I used

what card do u have? the msi when flashed has no extra features

He's probably referring to the one build by ATI. I read that only the ones built by ATI and Saphire are the ones that gain the extra XT features after flash.

Just go ahead and flash the card. Use the instructions in the link a few posts up. Dont worry, odds of you damaging the card are very small.

ALL Radeon 9800pro -256/256MB benefit from the flash to XT if they are r360 core. The 256MB Radeon Pro IS an XT before the flash - the the flash simply unlocks the xt's optimizations, the thermal diode and Overdrive . . . . and it gets hot (you may need a AC Silencer to keep cool).

OTOH, the 128NB Radeon Pro gets VERY little benefit from the flash . . . . the "shader optimizations" will NOT (practically) improve your performance (except perhaps in 3D Mark03/05 benchs) over a simple O/C.

The article at rojak-pot (linked in the quote) answers ALL your questions and is VERY throrough. BTW, you can use a CDRW or your HD - instead of a floppy - to flash (and copy your OLD bios).

edit: i believe that is the WRONG modding guide link . . . try THIS one:

actually, not all 256MB 9800pros really benefit from the flash. it is only the ones on a 9800xt pcb that really benefit, as they are 9800xts in disguise. there are 128mb versions of them, too. other "9800xt" bios flashes are not actually 9800xt bioses, the ones for a 9800xt pcb are. the way to tell is to look at your card and a 9800xt, if the capacitors/etc (other than the heatsink) are the same, than it is truely a 9800xt.

i did say ALL 9800p 256/256MB on r360 core will flash to "true" XTs.

the easiest way to tell, is to remove the HS and look at the core - either you will find r350 or r360.

The guide - included in my above edit - tells ALL.

Out-freekin'-standing!!! I couldn't resist much longer. After reading about flashing the BIOS on the 9800 Pro 256/256, I went on the wild side and did it! All went well and now I have an 9800 Pro with the overdrive tab enabled and 9800XT performance. I am stoked in getting a performance jump of 8.4 percent in core speed and 7.4 percent in memory speed.

I guess this will hold me over until my X800 XT PE arrives in a couple weeks. The nice thing about this mod is that it is reversible if needed. Cool...

Good luck to others that wants to try it.

Just a followup. After a week, no problems with the 9800 Pro flashed to 9800 XT BIOS. In fact I can see the change in performance in Far Cry and Doom 3. Everything is maxed out and no problems with heat. In fact, I OC'ed my mobo and I am really ROCKING

Thanks to all regarding the link on the 9800 Pro flash.

All the best.
