This is going to be interesting...

Manned Steam powered rocket (cuz real rockets are round earther tech) to launch this Saturday. He claimed it was made from scrap.
Plan is to reach one mile attitude and take a picture. Couldn't he just take a commercial flight?

Kicker is it is on Fox News site, under Science section. :awe:

No I didn't go to fox news to find this, google news collated it.

Oops misread, 1800ft up, travel distance is a mile.

He couldnt do this from the top of a mountain, or any number of modern aircraft that are more than likely much safer?

No, see, that would force him to use "round-earth" technology, which would alter the view and fool him into seeing a round earth. Only his rocket will give a proper view of the flat earth.

One mile with a steam powered rocket made from scrap!?

That's a lot of pressure to contain and release in a controlled fashion.

Me thinky rocket go boom on pad.

I hope the cameras recording this are higher tech than the rocket itself. I want good video of him proving that his body can become flatter than the Earth.

“I don’t believe in science,” Hughes said. “I know about aerodynamics and fluid dynamics and how things move through the air, about the certain size of rocket nozzles, and thrust. But that’s not science, that’s just a formula. There’s no difference between science and science fiction.”

What now?

WTF does he expect to see from 1,800 feet up? Even at 37,000 feet in a jet you can't really see the curvature of the earth, that's why people use weather balloons to get much higher up and take pics.

I think that's the point. He goes, he sees the earth is flat, and reports his finding.

Looking at his earlier videos, I don't think he is a flat earther. He's been launching rockets for a few years. The flat earth thing just draws attention.

so many things come to mind about this:

"safety not guaranteed"

"that's gotta hurt"

"that will buff right out"

"never go full..."

Ahh, this will be the 2nd time he has launched his ass in a homemade rocket and I am pretty sure I have figured out why it's all about proving the "flat earth".

"Still, Hughes converted to the flat-Earth belief recently, shortly after his first fundraising campaign for the rocket earned just $310 of its $150,000 goal. His second campaign, this time posted after his conversion and with the support of the flat-Earth community, succeeded in hitting its $7,875 goal."

And you can bet that after all of this publicity whack job flat earthers will be lining up to throw more money at him for his next attempt, assuming he survives. His first attempt, which only went a 1/4 mile up, only one of his two chutes open and left him pretty badly injured.

I agree, I don't think he is a flat earther either but I fixed your post about what his true intentions are.

Does this guy have kids? Darwin is watching in amusement.

Dont you need some permits or something? Or can any random yahoo just launch rockets into the air?

A California man intends to launch himself 1,800 feet high on Saturday in a home-built rocket to prove that astronauts faked the shape of the Earth.

He built his first rocket in 2014 and flew a quarter-mile in Arizona, though the flight left him injured. But the Saturday’s planned launch will pose a challenge to the daredevil. Not only was the 2014 flight a quarter of the distance

What?

A mile equals 5280 feet. 1800 feet is only 0.34 miles. Looks like he won't do much better than the quarter mile he did last time.

Also, if anyone was ever aboard a commercial jet, they'd know even 35,000 feet isn't enough to see curvature of the earth. 35,000 feet is nearly 7x a mile.

Wouldn't it be simpler to launch a camera a mile up instead?
