fleece jackets suck

they aren't particularly warm, they are useless on a windy or rainy day, and the softness is gone after a month.

why do they exist?

high quality fleece will stay soft and be warm while light weight

most importantly it is hydrophobic which means it will retain its insulating properties even when wet all while being relatively breathable making it an ideal material for athletic purposes in cold weather

Fleece isn't meant to be worn as an outer layer except in warmer climates. It's a breathable insulating layer. The idea of a high performance shell that's most likely made of Gore-Tex (or other high-tech breathable material) has tiny holes in the fabric, large enough for vapor to pass through but too small for water droplets. So you get a breathable but waterproof system. But for this to work, all layers must be breathable-made out of wool or synthetic polypropylene. This kind of set-up works great if you need to be active in very cold weather, like shoveling snow for example. If you are wearing all cotton your inner layers will be soaked in no time, and wet clothes are obviously no good in cold weather.

I have a NF Denali Wind Pro that blocks the wind, pretty warm. Wore it around Switzerland in Oct. The normal NF Denalis, the wind just cuts right through them. Its painful.

They're mostly good for layering, and inside when you dont wanna waste energy.
For most outdoor stuff they suck. They offer no real protection against anything, and hold more water than a sponge of equivalent mass.

Huh? No protection? You can buy windproof fleece. It's breathable so it's good for outdoor activities. 300 weight fleece can keep me warm into the 30s and continues to insulate when wet.

I can't stand the texture/feel of polar fleece types of material. I'm fine with the fleece used for jogging pants/sweatshirts though.

I prefer wool for most products...shirts, socks, coats, etc. If it ain't wool, it's cotton for me. No rayon, nylon. microfiber, polyester...only "natural fabrics."

I agree totally. They're stuffy indoors, easily permeable by wind outdoors, and cheaply made but often overpriced...

OTOH, I got a bunch of cute ones for a buck fifty at Menards that I use as blankets for the kiddies in the minivan. Serves its purpose...

I have a $200 moutnain hardware shell. I don't need anyhing else in the winter (it is under 10 degrees F here). I just have a t-shirt,dress shirt and shell.

This explains why. You get what you pay for. Walmart Fleece is not good.
