What do you mean SSD's aren't a mature technology? Latest gen SSD's are physically tougher than HDD's, and will most likely last as long/longer. Within 3-5 years, the prices on SSD technology will drop to the point where SSD's replace HDD's for most people; except in enterprise/big data environments.

Congrats on your new hard drive though, I suppose.

I shared my opinion. Their sudden failure rate is still very high. As for the per GB prices over time, hope U R right. We shall see! I luv speed, but I have all I need now, and I am not a GLUTTON.

The OP is just being an argument seeker. I told him 'welcome to 2008' in reference to his happiness that his mechanical hard drive has 64MB of cache, making his HDD super-fast, in his eyes. Back around 2008, we all would have been celebrating with him, but not in 2013. For the record, I am not dissing HDD, as I have several that is used for storage. The OP stated he saw no reason to use an SSD over a HDD (citing the cache of the HDD and the temperature), which I cannot agree with.

SSDs go into my computers, HDDs into my NAS boxes. Arguing of using either one to fulfill both jobs for me (at this point in time, might change in a few years) is nonsensical in my opinion.

While I see no issues with using a HDD as boot drive, personally I wouldn't do it cause it's annoying to having to wait for things to launch, open, copy etc.

For laptops a big reason is durability, you don't have to worry about destroying the SSD by moving/bumping the laptop when it's in use.

If you like mechanical hard drives, fine. But paying $46 for a used 500GB is ridiculous, Newegg has new ones for $50. For $60 you could have had a new 1TB drive with full warranty. I know you don't need the space, but the 1TB per platter drives are much faster. I'm amazed at what you are willing to pay for used computer hardware. It doesn't go up in value like a '67 Vette.

I have a 1TB Caviar Black from 2012 maxes out about 120 MB/s. I have a 3TB Toshiba I bought last week that maxes out at 185MB/s. Not that it matters in my situation, I use a SSD for a boot drive, and have for years.

I'd never buy a used mechanical drive.

Edit: I have only bought two NEW mechanical drives, many NOT NEW. Never once had problem cause I am discerning. As I posted elsewhere, the only drive I had big problems with, was the brand new not black WD I got on Newegg....had so many bad sectors WD diagnostics could not count them!

I RMAed it and got a healthy replacement.

The other new one was for a lappy I found, repaired and gave to someone worthy.

I am the ARGUMENT SEEKER!!!!!

And YOU are not a vulgar, inelegant, lacking in nuance, grace and depth with yr tunnel visioned despotic one sentence initial post! YOU are a Renaissance person and a Class act.

I am female, by the way, and the WD black in question was made in 2012.

In my life and those I choose to populate it, respect is earned. And never, EVER via anyone's toys.

A while back, I walked out of a restaurant, because a guy I finally agreed to have dinner with against my usually good instincts, was rude to the waiter.

Final thought: being "an enthusiast" is, without exception, diminished into meaninglessness by anyone who is a martinet/bigot. The latter echo weakness, fear and lack of enlightenment, perspective and bad people skills.

The HDD may have been made in 2012, but you made this post about the HDD purchase in 2013. Learn to read posts first before making ignorant comments.

It's the pot and the kettle.

Who tried to impugn this purchase and the happy result by hurling "Welcome to 2008"? Do U get, it was THAT I was responding to by reiterating the Mfg date of the drive? Forget WD blacks made last week are selling very well.

Do you think, if you had other than cutting edge technology, you would be worthless? I hope not, but I kinda think so.

In other milieus it's this month's Jordans. Same deal. In others, the Chanel purse or the Hermes or the Louboutins.

People are who they are, not what they have.

I have a SSD for my main drive but needed more space and bought a WD black for more storage and backup. I'm actually really surprised at how fast it is. Transfers were hitting 250MB/s or so. It's really responsive too. It's loud though which is annoying. You really notice it a lot after having an SSD for a while.

2 TB for $150 is still a great buy. The thing is it's fine for what I'm doing. I stuck steam on it and some back up stuff. I don't even really care for a SSD for that. Sure it would be nice but I don't feel I need to have one and really don't need to lose a ton of money for it.

See that's really interesting! As I shared in my original post, after I bought this drive I am writing from, I went to Newegg where there are like 350 reviews, mostly very good, but some saying it's so noisy I wanted to blow my brains out. Also, on Amazon.

So, I got a little nervous, esp cause this private vendor don accept returns. But, when it arrived and I hooked it up, it was, and remains, quiet like a mouse! And, at first, of course, the box was open.

Maybe I just got lucky. But I can now say from first hand experience, they are not ALL noisy, and I am sorry yours is one of the ones that is.

And, so far I have only bought two NEW HDDS for myself, that is. Others I get not new, after choosing carefully and also emailing a vendor...on ebay. And, one of the two new ones, a decent but not black WD I got on Newegg.....arrived with so many bad sectors its own diagnostics could not count them!

I RMAed, it, also spoke with WD who told me they can only test randomly, and would send me a fully tested replacement. And they did.

I think the time when we could cont on the health of a new drive, esp given "Globalization" (read: the sky's the limit re exploiting cheap labor and and so making it cheaper domestically)....is long gone.

Even just the spinning is loud to me though. Probably normal loudness but I'm so used to there being none that it's kind of annoying now. The searching is probably normal too for a spinning drive but it's pretty dang loud after not hearing it at all with an SSD.

Again, if only, thank God... from reading some reviews, I KNOW! I AM ALMOST TEMPTED TO GET MY PHONE, open the box and make a video so you can hear the silence of mine! Cept I am so tired I can hardly sit up, and I have an early meeting, plus I never uploaded a video to uTube despite how often I go there to watch vids.

Strange thing, the Seagate which came with this system, the one I removed when I got this new WD.....I could sometimes hear....also the WD which is now my backup drive, AND that WD is old, but still in good shape.

But when I use Revosleep to turn that off as it is right now and only this, the new WD black, is live and writing and reading....I mean it, TOTAL SILENCE.

Again, I feel bad U R having this, and I am positive, if I did, I would be annoyed too!!!!

I don't think suggesting that SSDs aren't mature, as far as reliability goes, is trolling. Plenty of stories of SSDs suddenly dying, with lost data as a result. I've seen a few threads in this forum, even about newer, "reliable" Samsung drives.

SSDs are fine for booting and running programs off of - stuff that can easily be re-installed if needed. But I wouldn't store much important personal data on an SSD, unless i knew it to be a reliable model (Intel X25-M G2 80GB, OCZ Vertex Plus R2 120GB), and even then, I would make sure to backup regularly.

Now that we know the OP loves their new HDD, this thread serves no further useful purpose - Super Moderator BFG10K.
