i know this usually means the cables are reversed but it is not. i just bought one new thinking my old floppys were broken but guess not. any ideas?

news flash : im a dumbass, its WAS connected reversed. i totally forgot that the pin1 is on the opposite side as opposed to harddrives. gonna see it my other flopps are working

edit2: the floppy that i bought was not keyed, but both my older ones ARE keyed, but on the WRONG side. wtf??? how did i make it work last time?????

Floppy cables always connect with the red stripe, pin 1 on the Left side, looking at the back of the drive. I've seen lots of cables that were keyed the wrong way, I'd recommend simply cutting the 'lug' off the connector than forcing it against the key.

It is really dependent on the drive. I have some floppy drives with pin 1 on one side others with it on the other side.

Not always. Rule of thumb for me is, if the light stays on, it's backwards. I usually try to check the PCB at the connector and look for pin 1 there. I too have used floppies keyed backwards - and there's nothing that says that the PCB won't be silkscreened backwards too.
