floppy drive not working...

Last night i put a floppy in my bro's comp to get some data...it started reading the floppy like usual then said the floppy is not formatted, do you want to format now. Since i already had data on the disk, i chose no. Then i tried various other floopies (blanks, full disks, etc) Nothing worked. Then i put another drive from another comp in there and the new drive worked fine. The only prob is that i cant seem to get the old drive to come out...IBM seems to have like fixed it in. Now when i put anything in the floppy, it says "device not ready". Is this a common problem? Has my floppy drive died? Also, is there a virus that screws up hardware? If my drive has died, is there a way to get the dam drive out? because it simply doesn't come out. It's one of those that are like integrated into the box. Dam ibm...

So if anyone can help me out here...please pm me or post here..

I have sometimes found that the FDD cable is put on the wrong way. Try flipping the cable around on the back of the drive. I have put the cable on the wrong way many times and get the very errors your talking about. Just try it.

nope....that wasn't the problem...i wish i could get the dam drive out of the computer! Oh yeah...;now the green light that indicates data is ALWAYS on...

Now it definitely sounds like the ribbon cable is backwards. Every time I have the light on constantly I reverse the ribbon cable and problem solved. It does sound like that floppy drive may be shot. Sorry I can't help you on removal/replacement other than to say "don't buy IBM next time." J/K

I agree with the don't buy ibm...i'm never buying a brand name again...all they have given me are problems. The small companies are more value with better service. So you think theres something wrong with the cable...? Do you mean reverse the cable ends or like reverse the way pin 1 is facing?

Flip the cable on the connector -- "reverse" pin 1. Only do 1 end of the cable.

Sounds to me like the drive's shot if getting the cable straightened out doesn't fix it. B4 u replace the drive, try deleting it from the system resources, then letting windoze "refind" it. If it doesn't work then, replace the drive.

Are you saying you can't get the drive out of the computer?
What model IBM is it?
Maybe someone here has worked on a similar model and can
give you some pointers!

I had a similar problem with my wife's old Compaq. I just left the old drive in and installed a new floppy in one of her open bays. If that solution will work for you, it may be easier than continuing to mess around with the old drive.
