Hey Peepers,

Is the LS120 Superdrive worth paying the extra bucks? or just stick with a floppy?

I already have a 100MB Zip drive.

Just curious as I have not heard of the LS120 'till now... although I read that it has been around for awhile now.

-Thanks

If it is for your own personal use, LS120 has many good uses (ie backup and moving large files between home and work). However, it is not widely used and will not have be very portable (ie. work sites, school). You may have a LS120 but if no one else has one you can't really transport your files anywhere. It all depends on what your gonna use it for.

LS-120s are almost not available any more. I have gotten two from E-Bay as backups. I have them in all my systems as "B" drives. I have used them for a few years, so have lots of files on them. But, removable media (C/F) now is easier and fast - but not necessarily cheaper. It is good for moving data, but not archiving. For that we now burn CDRs. So, unless you have a legacy to support, don't bother with LS-120s.

Put it this way, I had the opportunity to pick up one from work for FREE, but didn't bother because the media is expensive, and who else has an LS 120.

Not big enough to back up most things, more expensive than CDRW, what's the point?

Well, I picked one up for a few reasons.

1) If you still use floppies (like I do) the LS-120 drive reads them 4 times as fast. So you no longer have to wait forever for a disk to be read!
2) It really does make a quick storage location for files you want to keep but not bother burning (I hate wasting cdrs for 100mbs of data).
3) It's a geeky conversation piece! "Wow, you have one of those LS-120 drives? I thought nobody used them anymore!" lol

Compactflash or one of those pen drives are much better. I dont see the point in having one of those LS 120 drives seeing how no one uses them their not very portable.

Mine used to howl during a reboot. I prefer the silence of a good ol' floppy drive. Also, you'll have to sacrifice an IDE connection (if they're all IDE, as mine was).

Save your money and get a USB Key thingi. I am not sure of the proper name, but they look cool, and should be very convenient. Not all of us have floppy drives any more.
