After hearing some interviews with some of the kids on NPR, it was pretty clear that this was indeed the long-term goal of many of them. "We will be old enough to vote soon" was heard several times. Part of the goal of the protests is as a "get out to vote" deal, at least with some of them. Good. We have enough old motivated voters, let's get some young motivated ones.
I hope it happens, but honestly I doubt it. This is not the first time that the youth have been riled up over an issue and pledged to 'turn out the vote', and it has never materialized. Protesting is fun and exciting. It is rebelling. It is social, something they can do together. News crews show up and talk about what you are doing. It feel like you are doing something constructive.
But voting is boring and a bit of a hassle. It is ultimately done in private. There is no immediate feedback, and when it does come more often than not you actually get negative feedback in the form of your side losing.
