I don't care how strict Chicago is, there are still 300+ million firearms waiting for a psycho to do something like this. America's second amendment is unique in the world in the way it has promoted gun ownership and the inherent consequences therein.
Since there is no magical force field at state or county borders places with more stringent firearms laws aren't exactly protected well by them.

The problem here is most shootings are taking place in gun free zones or cities with the harshest gun laws. There are several laws in place, but the unlawful don't care.

I'm not super interested in that metric, because it misses the main issue. 2nd hand smoke has been greatly reduced. I'm looking to mainly reduce people not wanting to be killed by guns just like we reduced people not wanting to inhale smoke from others.

What new sweeping legislation is being introduced to reduce that? On the other hand, we had an "assault weapon" ("assault weapon" being a phrase used by ignorant fools) ban introduced as recently as last year. What politician is running on an anti-tobacco platform? How many include limiting the 2A in their platform?

Gun murders versus mass shootings. All categories of violent crime in the US have fallen over the last few decades, especially the murder rate. Mass shooting incidents continue on the opposite trend though.
Also something interesting, US gun ownership is actually declining. A lot less people have bought a lot more guns.
