Now here's more of a philosophical question (and possibly irrelevant). Do you feel it's better for someone to be merely subdued from the notion of something like mass-murder, or would it be better for such a thing to be identified (through whatever that would look like) and dealt with directly. I guess I mean, is it better to have active mitigation measures (such as regular, direct evaluation) or passives ones (such as waiting periods for gun purchases).

I think society needs to recognize and respect the humanity of those we disenfranchise. That is the way to stop this.

I like the cut of your jib.

I've always hated how quickly we find a way to segregate someone doing something horrible from the rest of us, for instance, with this one. Within 24 hours, we've got him shunted off as a crazed, MAGA-hat wearing, white supremacist that's far, far removed from the rest of us, to be treated as an exile and an outcast. To be cast into the flames of vengeance. We never look at anyone until after it happens, at which point they're no longer 'one of us' anymore, so there's no responsibility on us anymore.

Do schools not have metal detectors?
Some do, most don't. Besides, metal detectors need to be manned to matter. My HS growing up (large) had some 20 entrances across campus, and no real possible way to fence everything off military-style (not that they could afford that either).

If you limit entry and make students go through airport style screening, you're making a long line of sitting ducks in a shooting gallery.

Dang 20 entrances.

I don't know the technical aspects of a metal detector, but it couldn't trigger 2 doors to close if it's set off and thus trapping someone within?

Maybe the partial answer is to make schools like compounds with check points in and out? Terribly inconvenient, but it's a start.

I do. Works for suicide. There won't ever be enough evidence to really study this and prove anything, though. Still, there's evidence that this guy fantasized about doing this for like a year.

What do you think is the role of other mass killings in motivating a potential mass murderer? I keep hearing that many of these mass shooters were inspired by Columbine, while the Columbine killers said in their journals that they were inspired by the Oklahoma City bomber. Are emulating, or perhaps outdoing, these other acts a necessary part of the fantasy?

I am wondering if we're experiencing a cluster of mass killings that is essentially feeding off itself.

I am. There will surely be incidents but the vast majority of people would fold quickly.

So how many unwilling would you be willing to kill to remove them from their guns? So we go from the periodic terrorist/mentally ill/evil person killing a dozen people at a school to widespread instances of soldiers being asked to engage previously law abiding and non-threatening gun owning citizens who won’t willingly comply? This line of thinking is a solution worse than the problem and shares the same lack of logic as the “build a wall” calls. Hell, the same side who says “banning abortions will just force women to resort to coat hangers in back alleys” thinks that gun owners would be compliant right after saying no way women would comply for abortion?

Looks like he's another RW white supremacist terrorist. Trump lover of course. Very fine people on both sides.

https://www.thedailybeast.com/nikolas-cruz-trained-with-florida-white-supremacist-group-leader-says

White supremacist. Fascination with murdering and torturing animals. History of violence. Gun nut. Expelled from school and previously banned from bringing bookbags.

But should he get a gun? GOP says hell yes! 2A FTW! All the little Nazis need their guns. It's what the founding fathers intended.

"
PARKLAND, Florida—Nikolas Cruz, the man accused of killing 17 people in a Florida high school, was a member of a “white separatist paramilitary proto-fascist organization,” the group told The Daily Beast.

Cruz, 19, is accused of opening fire inside Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. Prior to the shooting, he trained with the Republic of Florida, the group’s captain Jordan Jereb said (as first reported by the Anti-Defamation League). The RoF seeks to create a “white ethnostate” in Florida, according to its website, a view that Cruz supposedly shared.
...
Jereb said Cruz belonged to a RoF “cell” from Clearwater and drove up with members to Tallahassee to do paramilitary training. RoF was recently operating in Tallahassee and attempting to court new members, according to a local news report from last year. The group posts videos of training montages on the internet with members in fatigues brandishing weapons.

“I’m not trying to glorify it, but he was pretty efficient in what he did,” Jereb said. “He probably used that training to do what he did yesterday. Nobody I know told him to do that, he just freaked out.”

Cruz received at least one of his guns through the white supremacist group, according to Jereb.."

Emulating? I don't really see that. But yeah if you see other people attaining the power you seek, that certainly adds power to the fantasy. There is an escalation in scale that also seems to happen. Outdoing someone enhances the power.

Like a mantrap? Would likely never pass fire code, never mind the fact it would be un-affordable. Frankly I think this is just trying to find a technical solution for a people problem.

We had mock emulators of Columbine like, the week after it happened in my HS. People started calling in bomb/gun threats from the payphones in the school lobby. Thrills, tapping into lust for power, skipping tests they didn't study for, who knows. Had like 4 within a month before they just disconnected the phones. This was a bit early for ubiquitous cellphones.

Yes, the shooter was an enthused Donald Trump supporter. No doubt still is....

And THIS is the typical Trump supporter interpretation of "MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN".
And Donald Trump knows this. He knows this.
He played up to these people at every Trump rally.
These people got him elected, so naturally Donald Trump is never going to condemn these people or their acts of violence.
Trump will offer prayers, call this an act of a single nutcase, but Trump thrived on his nutcase base to get him elected.

We really need to clean up America.
Toss all of these terrorist politicians like Trump's out on their ass, along with 99% of all NRA owned and paid for republican politicians, and yes a bunch of NRA money loving democrats as well, then pass strict gun laws banning all assault weapons.
Confiscate all of these weapons from every household going door to door.
Exactly as law enforcement would do if one were making meth in their basement. Or bombs.
And stop this insane love affair Americans have with their guns.

To have your child slaughtered in a classroom and THEN have that change of heart... is a bit too late.

True americans right? Very fine people indeed.

Also CNN is reporting that neighbors had video of him doing target practice in his backyard prior to this shooting. Really seems like there were a ton of red flags for law enforcement to pick up on.

Luckily for sane Americans that understand why the 2A is so important, posts on overly left AT P&N are no better than thoughts and prayers.

I tried to donate to the NRA this morning, seems like the site was having an issue. But they should have some of my money today, if not tomorrow. When the libs want to discuss actual good ideas to help curb gun violence, let me know. But until that time, while they're still talking about semi-auto bans, capacity bans, suppressor bans, "assault weapons" bans, suing manufacturers, ammo bans / taxes, and other do nothing feel good garbage that harms the rights of all of us, they'll continue to face very stiff opposition.

you are a disgusting tool. I truly wish endless pain and misery on you.

Because a semi-automatic AR is a rifle styled with bits all over it and painted black. Usually has a magazine that holds a handful more than a stock/unmodified hunting rifle of equivalent caliber. It's just a goddamned rifle.

EDIT: Here, ignore all the gun nutter garbage, the picture is the point I'm trying to make:
Why don't we just ban them all? If you want to hunt take a bow and arrow out there or a spear.

Isn't funny how the same lawmakers who claim guns aren't the problem are so quick to point fingers at the media, Hollywood and video games?? Oops, this isn't a Second Amendment issue, it's a First Amendment issue! Liberals gave up that canard years ago.

Conservatard hypocrisy at work I guess...or maybe they just feel safer speaking out against people whose checks they aren't cashing.

Video games, not guns, to blame for school shooting, says Kentucky gov.

Yes trap 'em!

The people problem would be even more expensive. It would be minority report territory I think to make it work. The people problem goes beyond the mentally ill if the reports that someone had already warned the FBI about this kids postings about wanting to be a shooter.

You can't ban guns so that's out. Knifes kill too as well as baseball bats. You need to trap or pat down kids and that obviously only works for schools.

The real solution and it's also expensive, yet to be developed is either guns or bullets that can be shot down or personal armor.

There is always the North Korea "3 generation" solution to these types of problem. If someone commits a mass murder (or other serious crime), they execute 3 entire generations of your whole family! Talk about extreme deterrent to report and take care of shady behavior!
