Some will say this IS NOT the right time to talk gun control. But this is EXACTLY the right time to talk gun control.
Could this have been avoided? Probably not, BUT....
Listening to the audio it was apparent the shooter had weapon(s) of mass destruction on him.
The weapons that our military carry into battle.
THIS MUST STOP!!!!

Making ALL of these guns/weapons illegal and absolutely un-accessabe, un-obtainable, un-purchasable. Weapons only available to the hands of our military IN ACTION.....
Doing THIS would cut down on the carnage.
Not the violence per se, but on the carnage.

If a shooter only has a shotgun or basic hand gun at their disposal then when the shooting begins the victim(s) have more time to run away, hide, get away from the danger.
But when the shooter opens up with multiple shots per second as is the case with assault weapons, everyone within eye site will be gunned down. PERIOD!
No time for a victim to respond, no time to get out of the way, no time to run.

Until we address and BAN these assault weapons of mass destruction, until that day comes we will lose a lot of innocent children and adults meantime.
There is definitely a connection here. Dots easily connected.
And action that MUST take place from congress, but don't hold your breath.
Our NRA controlled congress and legislators are as guilty as the shooters themselves.
To take no action when action could have been taken, you become a co-conspirator.
This shooter should get life in prison, at least, and so should any congress man or woman that refuses to address and pass gun control to ban these assault weapons.
Toss them ALL into prison.

This is your America, ugly as it is.

weapon of mass destruction? cmon now....

a semi-auto AR-15 is going to fire just as fast as any semi-auto pistol - as fast as you can pull the trigger (barring bump stocks..).

i wonder - if the news showed pictures of dead kids gunned down and laying in the school hallways in pools of blood, would preventing these tragedies gain more public interest?

because right now it's just a body count, a nameless faceless body count that's relatively small compared to some of the other shootings.

and everyone except the locals just goes "huh" and forgets about it after a couple days.

I'm sure people like Slow are very happy. Another bunch of school kids killed and nothing is done about it.

Congrats dude.

The twisted mindset to kill indiscriminately is the core issue here and a person like this will always find a way to do their deed.

We don't have to help them with an environment that is conductive and almost supportive of their behavior right up until the point they pull the trigger.

True and we should wait until all of the facts are in before we try to lay blame on people apart from the trigger man.

There isn't a realistic way to halt it from happening in this fashion, as any reasonably intelligent or desperate person is going to make it happen, regardless. Steps need to be taken to get in front of incidences like this, unfortunately I have no idea what that looks like.

Doors that are locked on the outside but can be opened from the inside with TSA like security to get to the door maybe? Throw in a long winding path to the screening area so you can't just run straight to it kind of like military bases do for vehicles? It would take extreme measures to stop both students and non-students who are determined to get in, and I'd define anyone who is willing to kill a bunch of innocent people as determined.

I sure hope we can do something about it but like you damned if I know what that is.

This one won't be hailed as a hero by the NRA. Since, again, "only a good guy with a gun can stop a bad guy with a gun," the usual mo is to turn the gun on oneself after murdering people, thereby becoming good. Not in this case...

It's a complex question with difficult answers

I've heard that in some countries in Europe, they show drunk-driving accidents in full, gory detail to actively discourage people from doing it. On the flip side, I know enough people who have watched too much LiveLeak & similar types of sites that they went numb emotionally.

Regarding forgetting, as a point of discussion & not to be insensitive, but what else are you supposed to do, realistically? I live a couple towns over from Newtown, where that awful shooting took place. When you're not directly involved or affected, what's the next step, over time? And not just that, but there's an endless string of awful events that have happened in our country: Columbine, 9/11, Newtown, Vegas, etc., plus the insane Chicago statistics. It is, unfortunately, commonplace in modern America. So the question is really, what should the answer be? And right now, at least, that's an impossible question to answer.

NRA just tweeted that "with Remington filling for bankruptcy, this is just the event we need to stage a turnaround."

There really is no answer.

We have guns readily available. Mental illness is more common. Add the two and it's a deadly mix. I expect we will see many more mass shootings. The Prez will go on TV and give his little speech. The NRA will put out their statement that guns aren't the issue, blah blah blah blah.

Unfortunately, it boils down to people are the issue, not just guns:

One of my previous coworkers was a prison guard. He said the number of creative ways people would come up with to kill each other in prison was just incredible. Some people are just crazy.

Did Trump do his normal "Thank the first responders" statement?
Asking for a friend who is in the middle of "school shooting" bingo.

His staff did the thoughts and prayers. Tweet was too well constructed to be orange shit-stain himself
