There is nothing to discuss as there is exactly one option available. No amount of control, testing, licensing, restricting, or otherwise limiting guns will solve the problem. The one and only solution is to eliminate all firearms in the US. This would quite literally be a war on guns, and it would most likely work about as well as the war on drugs.

I think the second amendment should be honored with bolt action rifles. Large and bulky items that cannot easily be concealed and have limited capacity to slaughter a crowd of people. A man trying to gun down a church with one is more likely to miss his one shot and get mauled by the men nearest to him. It's possible a person dies from that shot, but far better than losing the entire room.
So I say... to everyone and their dog have your guns, but we're keeping their function as close to the writing of the second amendment as possible. The modern day bolt action will suffice. Some restrictions re violent offenders and the mentally ill would still apply.
If a person wants a REAL weapon (handgun or assault rifle), they'll need to be a member of the military, law enforcement, or other profession fully trained in safety and combat. Then we'd still have restrictions for crime, mental health, etc. Probably require reasons for ownership as well, and not just hunting, collection, or 2A.

Violent crime is trending down, mass shootings may be up, but the overall trend is that less people die from firearms every year ( and yet more and more guns are "out there"). These are things that closely parallel tobacco statistics, only guns owned is going up while less people smoke. When tobacco is brought up here I've been told that the discussion has already been had and limits are in place, use and death is declining.

The school I went to, albeit large, had something like 15-20 separate entrances to different buildings, and there wasn't really a reasonable location for a military-style entrance gate, unless you started eminent domaining local residences. It would be simply impossible to 'secure' that campus from a dedicated intruder outside of creating a prison-style DMZ, which no reasonable local school district could possibly afford.Doors that are locked on the outside but can be opened from the inside with TSA like security to get to the door maybe? Throw in a long winding path to the screening area so you can't just run straight to it kind of like military bases do for vehicles? It would take extreme measures to stop both students and non-students who are determined to get in, and I'd define anyone who is willing to kill a bunch of innocent people as determined.
