GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Florida has confirmed that former Notre Dame Fighting Irish coach Charlie Weis will be Will Muschamp's offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

Florida's announcement follows Sunday's confirmation by the NFL's Kansas City Chiefs that Weis would be leaving the team to again join the college ranks. Weis will remain as offensive coordinator of the Chiefs through the postseason.

Following Sunday's regular season-ending loss to the Raiders, Weis said the Florida job will not be a distraction to him as he helps Kansas City prepare for its upcoming wild-card playoff game.

"I will do everything I can to help the Chiefs be successful,'' Weis told reporters Sunday. "I'm working for the Chiefs as long as we can make this work. Now that we're in the tournament, I'm hoping we play until February.

"I've gone through this once before [leaving the New England Patriots' staff to be the coach at Notre Dame], so I have a very good reference on how to separate family business from work. Fortunately, after going through it the last time, I had a very good experience. You go to work, you work all day. You do everything in preparation [for the game] and at the end of the day, if there's something else that has to be done, that's the time you do it."

I hope they have a cheeseburger budget built into that contract

I wonder how many degrees and from how many more institutions he has added to his resume during his off-time? :hmm:

Old news.

Still unclear why he left the Chiefs for the college game.

B/c he was once the Great Fat Hope for Notre Dame, not too long ago. And as much as he never deserved that accolade, plenty of people still seem to believe it.

Right, but then why leave the NFL after you've had an incredibly successful season as an OC for the same position at the college level? I would think that being an NFL OC would keep more doors open to head coaching possibilities at both levels of the game.

The only thing I can think of is that he must have really, really, really not gotten along with Todd Haley.

I have no idea why he keeps wanting to coach college ball when he's established that he's great in the NFL, but whatever.

I guess if it was a head coaching job I would get it. But this is moving down.

He's doing it to groom his son for coaching. He's got a kid that graduates high school this spring that had some deal setup with Muschamp to go work for the football department while he's in college. He was supposed to go to Texas, but now that Muschamp is Florida's coach, he's going there, and I guess somehow Charlie was talked into going as well.

Pretty sweet deal for the kid, although it'd be weird having your dad at college with you.

The media keeps trying to portray some fighting between Haley and Weis even though there's maybe one instance of any problems at all (during some game, Haley was caught yelling into his headset, so even then the proof isn't exactly definitive). If you want an idea of how out of touch with things in KC most of the media is, a lot of them were saying Josh McDaniels is likely to take Weis' place.

I've always heard that Weis is in fact a great coach, but that he doesn't relate well with all the baggage that college-age players carry (as opposed to the hired professional players of the NFL)

Well he's not going to be the coach. He's going to be the OC who will be calling the plays.
In the past when he was at Notre Dame, he took some criticism which is really due to the defensive side of the game. He is being recruited at Florida to do two main things: Help with offense (which he has proven to be good at) and help with recruiting (he's good at recruiting).

I don't feel that he's all that great of an offensive coordinator (he's ok, but I think there's been plenty of better ones as far as playbook and playcalling), but he's good at coaching offense and getting guys to play solid football.

But, I can imagine QB prospects going to Florida specifically for Weis, although it'll be curious to see him working with a prototypical college QB (that's as much of a runner as a thrower).

As for Notre Dame, that just wasn't a good fit. He butted heads with the administration on a bunch of things (they for instance weren't happy about his fondness for cussing). The offense, was never a problem, but he needed help with defense. He'll have that at Florida (and I think Florida has an edge over Notre Dame in recruiting these days, so he'll have an even better chance at getting top players).

Funny thing is, it might turn out to be a good thing for say Pioli and the Chiefs, as they'll potentially be able to get players developed for their system that can come in and produce as rookies.

if he had the florida players at nd, he'd still be there with a lifetime contract. will be very interesting to see how this works out.

I don't know, the Haley-Weis tension sounds more plausible than the son angle...

I think this is a really good thing for UF. Weis has only had success with his offenses and Muschamp is going to put together an excellent defense with Dan Quinn (another NFL assistant). UF is going to go to recruits and say "You can be to be coached by former NFL coaches in a pro system, and when you go pro you will have their connections."

How does that sound more plausible?

Oh, I see, you're joking. Or at least you'd have to be to link a Whitlock article.

I don't think "my son is going to UF" is a significant enough reason for Weis to back to college as an OC. I think "my son is going to UF, and I can't stand this guy Haley who is fucking up my offense, and I have that damn non-compete clause in my contract" is more plausible...

Indeed, I was hearing from other reporters yesterday that the Haley-Weiss dynamic was bad. Essentially:

They coached together under Belicheck at NE. Technically Weiss was higher up in the food chain than Haley. Now Haley is Weiss' boss. Weiss doesn't like the fact that he is working for someone that used to be below him. Additionally Haley is a hard-ass Belicheck disciple and Weiss is more of a Wade Phillips/Norv Turner 'aw shucks' type players' coach. Weiss doesn't like the way Haley operates.
