Florida Election Officials Miss Tally Deadline in House Race

FORT PIERCE, Fla. (AP) — Election officials missed a deadline on Sunday to report results of a two-day recount in Representative Allen B. West’s bid to remain in Congress, apparently sealing unofficial results giving the victory to his Democratic opponent, Patrick Murphy.

St. Lucie County did not meet a noon cutoff to finish processing 37,379 ballots that were cast early in the 18th Congressional District race, but it eventually released the results, which showed Mr. Murphy gaining votes in the recount. Regardless, under Florida law, previously submitted results favoring Mr. Murphy will be certified unless an emergency exemption is granted by the state.

“It puts an end to it as far as we’re concerned,” said Eric Johnson, an adviser to the Murphy campaign. “It puts an end to it as far as the state’s concerned.”

Mr. West’s campaign showed no immediate sign of conceding.

“At this time, in our view, the race is still undecided,” said the West campaign manager, Tim Edson.

Mr. West, a Republican, can still seek to formally contest the election, a difficult legal remedy. His aides gave no indication whether they would pursue such action. Dejected supporters of the congressman claimed that there was fraud, loudly chanting “Count our votes!” before election officials. Mr. Murphy’s supporters held signs reading “Respect the Results: Concede Now” and “Patrick Won!”

A recount of three days of early-voting ballots was conducted in St. Lucie County last week, narrowing Mr. Murphy’s margin a bit. The county’s canvassing board ultimately agreed to retabulate all eight days of ballots after discovering several errors and Mr. West’s supporters made a relentless push for a fuller recount. The campaign hoped Mr. Murphy’s margin of victory would decrease enough to force a machine recount of all ballots across the entire three-county district

Seriously, why hasn't the Federal government sent in the troops by now? Apparently the Republicans who run the state are a criminal enterprise or completely incompetent.

Its time we invaded and did some old fashioned nation building.

Florida politics have always been insane and there is no "nation building" possible in a nuthouse. Thankfully their demographics are changing or they'd be a hopeless cause. Unless these latest wackos are successful there's just no point in the fed getting involved.

I disagree, Mr. West has a right to contest the election and the Florida officials are acting in a legal manner by declaring Mr West's opponent in Mr Murphy is the official winner.

Which now means if Mr West decides to further contest the election, Mr West can pay every nickle of the costs of a recount that is likely to be futile. Because the tax payers are now off the hook while Mr. Murphy will be seated in congress by Florida election officials.

Its the ole adage, a fool and their money will be soon parted. And if money is free speech, ole Adam West will end up with less money to spread his stupidity. And with some luck, courts will dismiss West Law suits and fine his attorneys for filing frivolous
lawsuits. And dare we hope, West will be lampooned on Saturday night live while making into the Herman Cain hall of fame.

A desperate act can often be defined as an act of a lunatic. It's what I've been seeing more and more of from the folks that are resisting the swift tides and currents of change in our nation. It's what prompts them to seek shelter either in the form of minority rule, whether it be plutocratic, theologic, psuedo-monarchical and despotic, or in the form of secessional rumblings an/or real acts of such.

This denial of or resistance to change of rule by the emerging "new" majority is the real issue at hand. Pres. Obama is a perfect example of these changing times, which also makes him the perfect target to aim at.

IMO, Florida politics is the way it is because it represents a microcosm of how large parts of the nation is in a demographic state of flux.

Requests for recounts of Florida voting will always be honored as long as it's a Republican making the request. Of course, if it's a Democrat who's behind and making the request, Republicans will insist that due process and equal protection of the law require that counting stop right this instant.

Given the makeup of Florida's election officials, the "mistake" was probably intentional in order to cast doubt on the Democrat's win. They knew of the deadline but couldn't bear to certidy a Democratic win if there was any potential uncertainty. I predict the recount and litigation will continue until West is reappointed by election officials fiat-unless it becomes patently impossible to do so.

Florida, and to a lesser extent Ohio and a dozen other states are poster children for the immediate need for a federally controlled election system for federal offices run by nonpartisan professionals and which also has the sole authority to determine Congressional districts. If the states want their own BS partisan rules for state offices that's up to them but right now these crazy partisan systems adversely affect all of us.

Florida is such an embarrassment, I don't understand how someone could live there and think nothing is wrong with hour(s) long voting lines, complicated early voting process and perpetual counting delays. It should be everybody's duty to laugh at/shame anyone from Florida maybe that way there will be changes.

lol he lost deal with it

we all know that. The issue is this shouldn't have happened and shouldn't happen again.

There are going to be doubts on who really won. they need to do it right, every vote count and correct. Since that was not done the feds need to find out why and hold those responsible for it.

This is exactly why. there are going to be conspiracy's on what happened.

Its disgraceful that it happened. The feds need to find out why.
