Flowers on a first date?

What do you guys think-I have a first date tomorrow night, my sister thinks that I absolutely *must* get this girl some relatively inexpensive flowers for when I go pick her up. I don't know, it sounds nice but I don't want to be overwhelming, I've never done that on a first date before. I'm 17 and a senior in high school, so it seems to me that it may be a bit different than for adults-I don't know, I'm rambling...but what do you guys think?

Go for it. Just stop by the grocery store and get a nice $7 bouquet.

It's a nice thought.

Do it! Just don't make a super huge deal about it when you give them to her. Costco has GREAT cheap flowers if you live near one... Good luck dude!

hell no.

women want a challange. if they conquer it, they validate themselves. you get her flowers, she will think youre too sweet and a pushover. that or scare her off.

depends on the girl really. if this date goes well, and you go out again, id wait until the 3rd or so.

Long as they're not roses, it's sweet and will be appreciated. Roses are a little heavy duty for a high school first date. Probably more expensive than is worth it too.

id go with a wild flower sort of thing, if possible. just something inexpensive and shows you thought ahead.
just nothing that screams MARRY ME!

No, don't do it. You want to play your first date as casual unless you already know she's really into you. Go out, have fun, don't take it too seriously. Don't even necessarily take it as a "date", though you're welcome to go for a goodnight kiss at the end.

Side note: Don't listen to what girls say other girls want. They always go overboard.

I'm of the same school of thought; I think a nice Spring Boquet is a great idea.

However (wisdom follows):

It's been my unfortunate experience that it turns women off. Like you're coming on too heavy and they don't even know you yet or something. I have had minimal postive experiences w/flowers on a first date.

In fact, the last time I did it, here's what happened.

/walks up to door
/knocks
/girl opens door

"Hey Michelle...you look nice. These are for you"
/hands over boquet
"Oh....how pretty"
/girl turns, tosses boquet on couch five feet away
"Can we go to dinner, Mike? I'm starving!"
/MichaelD's weenie shrivels up and dies....date is ruined

So, that was my experience. Hold off on the flowers for now. If the date goes well and she is enthusiastic about the second date (and you are too) try them then. You may even score.

I'm 17 and a HS student too, but I think the flowers thing might be overdoing it for today's standards. Though, it really depends on the type of girl. If the chick is really mature and feminine then she would probably appreciate it. However, if I gave my gf flowers when I first met her, she'd be like "WTF are you doing?" Then again, she's definetely not a girlie-girl (in terms of personality).

as long as they aren't roses or anything expensive like that, i think it would be a sweet gesture (but not carnations, i HATE carnations but thats just me)

here are some more tips on things a guy can do to make a date better

1. tell her she looks nice
2. hold the door for her (at least once dammit)
3. get her to talk abou ther self, girls love talking about themselves

I'd say go for it... but realize that you're setting a really high standard for yourself right off.

Agreed... I scared off a cute girl I had a crush on... asked her to a homecoming dance, gave her a dozen roses, then she changed her mind.

Only do it if you see that they have flowers outside that you can pick. Although this time of year, they'll be dead so that won't work.

Haha, never thought of it that way.

Anyway, I don't think I'm going to do it (buy flowers), although I guess it really depends on my mood tomorrow. My sister is 27, so I can see why she has a different perspective of this than someone 10 years younger. I guess it just seems like a bit much to me. At any rate, all this is just me being paranoid and over-analyzing everything cause this girl's really cool and I want things to be great, but I'll just have to keep in mind that if it's supposed to work out, it'll work out, and whether I show up to her door with flowers or not isn't going to make or break the date. Thanks for the tips, hope you all had a lovely turkey day.

Flowers for a girl of 17y/o is a bit much imo. For a woman of 27y/o that is fine. She'll be expecting more as she probably has dated much more and also be more level headed with things.
