Nah, I think the OP and others (including yourself) should take a trip back to English class. Here I'll help you: "Floyd Landis has won the 2006 Tour de France " This statement does two things: Primarily it makes the claim that the 2006 Tour de France has already ended, which is completely false as it ends tomorrow. The sentence goes on to further claim that Landis was the victor of the race, however he is only the current leader until he crosses the finish line. Notice that nowhere do I make claims about an event that hasn't yet happened, no matter how inevitable. That's because I don't fashion myself to be Nostradamos (can we say the same of the OP?)... The OP should have said "Landis has assured himself a victory tomorrow in the 2006 Tour de France with his performance in the last time trial." There ya go kids, remember to leave an apple on my desk on the way out.

And, if you read the thread, you would the title was meant to be a joke. He won it, but everyonenotce here who didn't know much about cycling (ironically enough, they were trying to prove they did) said it was not over yet. Well, as a figure of speaking it is, exactly what the OP implied.

Nope, he won.

No, there's one stage left.

Not really. The last stage is for sprinters, who are all hours behind the general classification so there's no threat. None of the top three are going to risk their existing spots anyhow, plus they wouldn't have a chance at time bonuses against true sprinters like McEwen who are eager for a stage win.

Seems like some people need to learn a bit about cycling?

He could die. Seems like you need to learn the difference between "won" and "is (more or less) guaranteed to win."

If the guy in second trys to break away the fans would tear him apart. On top of all that, he and floyd are good friends and he's not going to do that to floyd.

Ding Ding! Correct answer.

It would be a HUGE breach of cycling ettiquete is anyone tried to take the yellow jersey from Landis. The guy in second place (a Spanish guy's name I can't remember at the moment, begins with a "P") is already celebrating his second place finish and calling Landis the winner.

Floyd went to the same high school as I did.

Congratulations, from one former buckskin to another!

Dude, I know what you're saying but the last stage is 154.5km long and Floyd can still lose. A long break away with him missing the bus and he's out.
Check back to 1989 when LeMond won the final TT and stage to win.

That's not likely. Landis and Pereiro are good friends and it is generally considered bad form to try something like that on the final stage in the TDF. Even the announcers are saying Floyd Landis has won the Tour de France.

A huge congratulations to team Phonak and especially Floyd Landis!!! That ride on Thursday was the best comeback in tour history, only Bob Roll called that stage with Floyd Landis winning. Phil Liggett and Paul Sherwen both said he had no chance at winning the tour this year before stage 17 began. Awesome awesome job!!!

Edit-Last year Lance Armstrong went down in a turn riding into Paris with the peloton and they held up to wait for him to rejoin.

Yep, another American win! Finally, someone who knows what they are talking about.

I've been following this Tour de France and personally, I think it is the most exciting in years. Historic in fact. People will be talking about that stage 17 (my mistake, it was stage 17) victory by Landis for years to come.

oh great. at least the french have a new target and will leave Lance alone...maybe.

so when are all the news articles about how he is not the "true" winner because so many were banned?

Fvck them. If those riders were doping, and it seems that they probably were, they don't deserve to be mentioned in the same breath with Floyd Landis.

They like Floyd much more than Lance.

This really did turn out to be a remarkable Tour. At the start I would have said the winner would be stuck with a big asterisk due to the fact that the favorites didn't start, but Landis' heroic performance on Thursday changed all that. The entire peloton has to agree he is a true champion and deserves the win.
