Shit I need to find a new place to live, that isn't even 1/2 a years rent in this area. (And anything with 2 bedrooms or more it wouldn't even be 1/4 of the year)

I live in San Francisco and rent is probably $20-$25k on average. But $6-7k is very doable for many areas.

That would be me.

I guess I'm a puss too. I'd say don't do it. It's only 8 hours. Just save the money for your company especially if it's between $10k and $3-4k. Your boss will notice. Trust me.

Yeah your boss clearly appreciated your contributions and loyalty since he threatened you with a burnt bridge if you didn't give two extra weeks of notice.

His boss isn't going to notice. If his boss does notice he'll probably think he's odd.

True. But if the difference is $6k-7k, that's a year's rent for most areas. A year's rent of money for 8-12 hours? :\

Consider me cheap but I'm not going to spend an extra $6k-7k for only 8 hours even if it's not my own money unless I get to have an orgy with beautiful STD-free women while flying.

meh, enjoy flying economy.

His boss is going to say "you flew economy? to china? WTF?"

so much face palm it hurts.

It's not an 8 hour flight. The statement was any flight OVER 8 hours is eligible for business class.

SF -> China = ~12 hours

you know what the boss IS going to notice? The employee all fucked up and tired the first day he's in china, rendering him useless to everyone.

Ok, enough of the exaggeration.

I flew to Asia at least once a year for years in coach. My trip: East TX to CA then to Japan or Korea then to one of the countries in South East Asia. I usually started the trip early on a Saturday and would not get to my destination until late at night on Sunday. You do the math how many hours it took.

I was able to work normally the next day (Monday morning local time) as usual in the US. Yes, it would be different due to the time lag and schedule but to say all fucked up and tired the next day is not true. Maybe I am not a wuss.

Great. Now if the company offered to send you business class would you do that or stick it out in coach?

Call me a wuss or whatever, but I'll be the wuss in business class drinking up all the free champagne and enjoying my almost-lay-flat seats.

God, Emirates ruined me.

I swear environment has an impact on your taste buds. I'm not really a champagne fan myself, but in a very fancy restaurant or when being catered to in first class, it tastes freaking delicious. :hmm:

KT

it's because they make the champagne from the collected tears of the peons in coach.

If someone is paying for it? Sure. But my trips are for my own company = out of my very own pocket => can't justify the huge cost different between coach (1.5K or less) vs. business (5-6K minimum). Some of us business owners are not multimillionaires as typical ATOTers.

The point of my post was you "could" function normally (a little jet lag for sure) if you flew coach, contrary to your statement of "all fucked up and tired the next day". I and millions of other fliers are doing that for years.

Sure, and you could also be fucked up from jet lag because you couldn't get any sleep due to the 4 year olds to your left and right crying for 16 hours. That was my previous experience in INTL coach and I would rather not do THAT again.

Just sayin, why take the chance if someone else is paying for it.

And I understand if it's your own company the decision is different, but that is not the situation for the OP.

What if you scheduled the flight so you landed early morning monday and you were expected to work in 1-2 hours after landing? I can't sleep comfortably in coach so I would much prefer business class...

That's why you set up your flight to land at your destination at night so you have a least a few hours to unwind. I tried to get some space by moving to sections with empty seats.

Don't get me wrong, I would love to go to business class but I just can't pay the $4K plus (at least) over the coach price.

I have no problem with kids crying because my headphone. Come one, kids can't cry straight for 16 hours. I also tried to move away to empty sections if possible. I haven't been to a jam packed trans-Pacific flight yet.

Anything > 0 is too damn much for me.

and to bring it back to the OP, the OP isn't paying shit, it's the company. And if the company didn't want him to fly business class, they would have written in their company policy "All non-C level employees will fly Coach at all times" or something to that effect.

I just booked a round trip biz class trip to Japan for mid-Jan and it was less than 5k. Ana and united. And I'm further away than you. Where are you seeing 10k?

Oops sorry thought I read you were going to Japan somewhere. I'd blame it on jet lag but I actually got to sleep in biz and keep my clock in tune with reality.

I just checked the prices (included everything) for my trip (round trip to Asia from 1/2013 to 2/2013) if I book it today (United and Japan Airline):

Coach - $1,695
Business - $7,125
First Class - $14,260

Try SFO to PVG. It's 10k+ on Kayak and after calling the corporate travel number.

meh, fly business for international flight is standard business practice. Just do it. If company has a reason to send you oversea, they can justify the 10k airfare.

I run my own budget in my business unit. While I would appreciate my staff saving me a few k, that's not that big a deal in the scheme of things and it's not out of my pocket anyway. And HR/Budget actually question you why you don't use up your budget at the year end.

Our company actually instituted a policy where you can select to fly economy instead of business and they'll pay you some cash. It's definitely not the difference in price but still money in your pocket.
