Seriously folks, I've been wanting to send my father to see the curvature of the earth, especially since I heard about a year ago that it would cost only (relatively mind you) $24,000.00.

OK, to be honest, yes, it's A LOT of money, but I hope to have a job where I can get my father that special gift...

Anyway, here's the thing I found a company that only charges $12,595.00!!! They have other space travel offers as well...sorry if this is a repost, but this deal is out of this world (ok, sorry for the bad cliche).

Don't mean to thread crap, but a cheap bus ticket to any large body of water will allow one to see the curvature of the earth. Give your dad a thrill and go Greyhound.

Wonder if they would actually let you do it or if it's just a publicity stunt. Like when Pepsi offered a fighter jet for 5 million pepsi points and some kid got everyone to send him their points. Pepsi had to pay him off since they didn't have a fighter jet to offer up. I read that Lou Gerstner, the CEO of IBM flew only 1.1 million miles in his 9 years there. Pretty hard to get 10 million miles unless someone pulls a bunch together.

A less expensive flight alternative than the MIG would be the Concorde, now that it's back in service.

Combine it with a European Vacation and you'll see the curvature of the earth coming and going, with a holiday in-between. Also, check for promotion "deals", as both Air France and British Airways periodically have 1st Class all-inclusive air/landpackages that will include a complementary Concorde upgrade in at least one direction at no extra cost. I don't know of anything current, however.

I had no idea a Mig25 could hit 82000!!! I wonder what an F-15 can do. Not sure I'd trust a Russian plane to go that high (one pinhole in the fusealage and you're liquified).

Anyway, I've wanted to send my wife into space for a long time...with a backhand

Having flown the Concorde twice back in the early 90s at our clients' expense, I can tell that IMO it is not worth all the hype surrounding the aircraft and service. If I recall correctly, the top altitude on those trips was 58,000ft and yes you could see the curvature of the earth at that altitude, but the extremely small windows in the Concordes and the thickness of the wall between the inner window and outer window severely limits your view. I would equate the view to that of looking through roll of duct tape held up to your eye.

BTW wakeboarder, I am a Delta 5 million miler so it is feesible to get 10 million + miles. Last newsletter that I checked there were some 10,000 million milers and some 2300 5 milion milers in their program.

I was under the impression that a thread crap could only come in th fs/ft forum, this does not diminish the deal if someone states their opinion on the matter that is not a thread crap in hot deals.

Man, I can't get over how cheap this is compared to how much I thought it would cost...

If you ever get the bucks, you may want to get dear old dad something else instead of sending him screaming through the stratosphere in some duct-taped 3rd world piece of junk flown by "Ivan" who smells of cheap vodka and uses these flights to log air time because the Russian government doesn't have enough money to buy jet fuel or pay their mechanics.

i love how the russian military is up for sale.

the MiG 25 "Foxbat" was developed by the USSR in the 70s to intercept the XB-70 "Valkyrie" bomber, which could fly at at least 80,000 feet and mach 3. there were only 2 XB-70s ever produced, one crashed during test flights and the other is housed at the Air Force Museum at Wright-Patterson AFB in Dayton. the XB-70 program was doomed by the complete inability to find a weapon system for it. can't just open bay doors and start carpet bombing at mach 3, and it was well before precision guided munitions. heck, a nuclear warhead probably would miss its target.

Ok, I know that if there's every any problem with the aircraft, the Russians make GREAT ejection seats....

Question is, WTF happens to you when you eject at 82,000 feat??? Do you burnup on reentry? Do you drift into orbit???

It wasn't a typo, ya just read it wrong. 10,000 people are million milers, and 2300 are 5 million milers (meaning 10,000 people have over 1 million miles)
