Like was said above, it was replaced in spy plane duties by the SR-71, the whole idea of which if a missle was shot at it, you could drop the hammer and run away from the missle.
They still fly the U-2 because compared to the SR-71 its cheap to fly.
Remember the SR-71 was designed for such high speed that while sitting on the ground the jet fuel poured out of the seams on the gas tanks, not what we would call fuel efficient.

More importantly, the SR-71 needed its own, unique fuel. Not only did you need bazillions of gallons of it, you had to fill up a tanker or two with it. Which meant those tankers weren't available for regular re-fueling duties... the costs add up pretty quickly.

I think the U-2 runs on garden variety jet fuel.

That is amazing...all of it. So I guess it proves you can go at light speed and not turn into goo while not in an airplane.
