there's a really good app called
fontlister that will do what you want, and it's a very tiny application. as far as i know it doesn't do anything to your registry, there's no install file if you download the .zip file, you just unzip and run.
when you're in the program, if you want to view fonts that are not installed yet, go to "view\fonts in a folder" and it'll show you fonts in a directory of your choice. i have a couple cd's with over 15,000 fonts each and it makes browsing them very easy.
