Who would EVER put ex-lax in their food in the attempt to expose a food thief? Such an act could be construed as intent to poison someone even if the food were not intended for the thief.

I wouldn't put ex-lax in anything. That could have legal problems attatched. However, a little (Or a lot) of ghost pepper relish on that sandwhich in the fridge. You'll spot the thief pretty easy. Or mince up some Carolina Reapers into a nice italian dressing and let it steep for a few weeks. Then leave that in the fridge.

I would go the super spicy route just to be safe although laxatives would be funny.

Dumping alot of pepper or steeping it in hot pepper juicet would be too spicy and anyone eating it would spit it out at the first bite. Using a half dose of exlax would make proving you intentionally tainted your own food more difficult.
Or just use a small cam overlooking the cafeteria fridge.

I am glad that my co-workers are not thieves. Haven't have any problem at all about stealing stuffs, food or not.

The management needs to do something about blatant thievery.

The fridge at work is for that day's food only, not for a weeks worth of stuff but that is not an excuse for stealing, that's the reason for the custodial staff to throw things away that have been in there for at least 24 hr.s. Although where I work only Sunday is throw away day.

I'm surprised no one has suggested the idea of a surveillance camera. A pinhole camera in a bottle of Ipecac or something else no one would ever touch could work. And they're so cheap now that even if it gets stolen it's no great loss. Plus if you happen to catch the thief or thieves, there's always the chance you could get them suspended or fired. It would be well worth the effort and potential expense. The battery life on a small usb camera should be good enough to last at least one 8-9 hour work day.

Or at the very least put a sign up that states the room is being monitored so people are more responsible or honest.

People who steal are thieves. makes no difference what they are stealing. That said, they deserve to get whatever might be in YOUR food item. What if you had medicine in it that was harmful to someone that wasn't prescribed it? They don't care so why should you be threatened by retribution if they commit the act? But instead of a laxative (my vote) how about some female hormones and see if you can get the pussy to go all emotional?

Don't a lot of US companies do regular drug tests? Make brownies or cake with increasing amounts of weed in them. Not enough to have any effects the first while, but enough to make them fail the drug tests. Then call every single company in the area that has similar functions and warn them about the co-worker that got fired for drug use and also got caught stealing.

I did some work in a building where the community fridge was chained and padlocked. When I asked about it, they said they had setup a hidden camera and discovered the overnight cleaning crew eating items out of it.

However, there was so much turnover of the cleaning personnel (contracted firm) that having someone fired didn't make a difference. So they just chained and padlocked it. They gave a key to everyone that wanted to use it.

I think the chain was mostly for looks, as the padlock went through a latch that kept the door closed.

Fortunately, where I am now, there haven't been any problems.

Yep. She was planning on eating it throughout the week. Gone. Another guy brought in a loaded dinner plate with chicken, rice and beans on it wrapped in plastic wrap. Somebody actually ate all the chicken and left the rice/beans alone and put the plate back in the fridge. It takes some set of balls to pull shit like this...

If you have this issue at your work (and I've heard of people having this issue) then you're clearly in a certain type of industry or profession that is full of immature douchebags. I can keep something in our fridge for a decade if it weren't for the maids that clean the fridge out every other week.

No need to label or anything either. If there are leftovers that people want to share then they put it outside the fridge on the table.

edit: Then again, maybe I'm just bias since I've only ever worked for Fortune 500 companies.

Taking other people's condiments is only acceptable if:

1) you aren't finishing off the bottle, leaving the original owner with at least 1 serving
2) you replace the bottle when it's low for being a leech just because it's convenient for you.

If you don't obey those 2 rules then you are a complete asshole. No question. If you obey those rules, then it's at least acceptable.

First day of work at my very first job and I walked into the break room to see my first ever boss eating my lunch. I must have just stood there and stared like an idiot because he asked me what was wrong and I told him he was eating my lunch. Turns out he and I had the exact same taste in microwaveable meals and he thought it was just one he had forgotten he had brought (since no one else there ate those). He told me to pick a place and he would buy my lunch from there.a

That was almost 20 years ago and I don't think its ever happened again.

Makes sense to me. Normally if one of us notices a condiment getting low we'll buy more. Something like Ketchup will last like a year anyway so it would make no sense if everyone brought their own. Same with stuff like cream for coffee etc.
