Only a fool will buy a Granite Bay Motherboard now.

The Granite Bay Intel E7205 Chipset Motherboards will only be useful for around three months.

Why didn't Intel come out with their own Granite Bay Motherboard?

Intel new that the Intel E7205 is geared for the Workstation market and not the Desktop market.

Intel will be coming out in a few months with their new Springdale Chipset which will support up to a 800 FSB, and support high speed DDR RAM such as the PC-3500 DDR RAM and beyond.

The Granite Bay Motherboards such as the ASUS P4G8X only supports up to PC-2700 DDR RAM.

Any faster DDR RAM such as PC-3500 will run as a PC-2700 DDR RAM.

Just wait a few months and get the new SIS Chipset or the Springdale Chipset.

Uh... what brings this on?
BTW, you might want to check your facts, I see three errors right off the bat and P4's aren't even my strong suit

The granite Bay motherboards officially only support pc2100 hence why they only have a 1:1 ratio...However it has been known for awhile that the board can oc above 166fsb and one site got 188fsb and was running ram at 376mhz ddr of pc3000 speed...It ran fine and benched very high!!!

I agree in the sense there apperas to be some bugs and the springdale will likely be a more refined board for us power/gamer users. The workstations are not likley having the issues with the 9700pro cause it isn't geared to workstations.

IMO the prices are too high (ie like general server/workstation stuff) for right now....

Well I like my granite bay motherboard, regardless of what people say. Sure, it was expensive, but it's allowed me to run my cpu at near the max it can be with 2 dimms (all my other boards severely limited my bus speed with 2 dimms), the ram benches are amazing (4100mb/sec!) and it gives me 14100 3dmarks with my p42.26@2.9 and ti4400. so... i'm not complainin'.

So at the very moment a new chipset and architecture becomes available all motherboards based on previous chipsets suddenly cease to function? Wow, I did not know that.

Man will I be busy for the next couple days, going around to all the houses of those for whom I built now-useless computers based on "useless" chipsets like the KT133A and VIA 694x, and collecting them for disposal. Heck, I have about a dozen "useless" K6-II+ and K6-III+ Super 7 systems still floating around out there which are apparently now "useless" for anything except a paper weight! Holy crap am I going to be busy.

Thanks for the information! I'm going to get started right now.

I've been holding onto my Socket A, waiting for the Bartons to come out.

Chipzilla is looking better and better all the time.

I was too until I learned that my KT333 board won't run a Barton. Now I'm waiting for the Barton so that my 333MHz FSB Tbred will cost me less.

And I agree, Intel is looking better every day.

What KT333 board do you have, ST? The 8K3A+ in your sig? Where did you find out for sure about the (lack of) Barton support?

I can't remember where I read that specifically, if it does come to me I'll post the linkage. But the gist of what I remember reading is that the CPUID strings in the last BIOS rev. don't include Barton chips. FSB support for the 400MHz variety is not guaranteed. There is no PCI/AGP divider for 200MHz so you'll be overclocking your PCI/AGP buses heavily.

That's all that comes to mind at this hour. Do you know anything contradictory? I'd really like to be wrong here.

You very rarely see someone come back to a thread like this. I think they get out of bed on the wrong side one morning and just start spewing stuff without thinking.

I'd be on the wrong side of the bed if I didn't upgrade from the system he has.

I haven't heard anything like this - and isn't barton debuting at a 333 MHz FSB? I'm 99.9% sure it will run on my 8K5A2+, and I'm pretty sure it would run on the 8K3A+ with a BIOS update.

On the subject - Granite Bay is, right now, the best motherboard chipset you can get for an Intel CPU. The only problem is that it's so dang expensive!

Why not wait a few more months and get Hammer? You'll always get something better if you wait, but you have to know when to take the plunge as well. 3 monts in the computer industry is a long time...
