Football fans in Tampa area

ACC Championship Tickets are buy one, get one free.

Found this initially as a joke on a blog I frequent, but figured there might be some people in the Tampa area who might want to take in a decent (debatable) football game Saturday.

That's what they get for putting the championship game in Florida. They expected FSU and Miami to be in the game every year, but the reality is that Virginia Tech is the Coastal Division champion most years, and the Atlantic champions have been private schools with no fan bases (BC and WFU).

When the game moves to Charlotte, expect the place to be packed. VT, GT, NCSU, UNC, FSU, Clemson, and UVA would all bring at least 30k to Charlotte.

This isn't the year to rag on the ACC. Top to bottom, the ACC is better than the SEC this year (proven by the ACC's head-to-head record against the SEC this year and supported by Sagarin's ratings). Florida and Alabama are better than the ACC's best, but from there down the ACC is much stronger.

That said, this year's ACC championship game will be a snoozer. VT and BC both have incredible defenses and pathetic offenses. I expect a 10-3 type score.

I am an FSU fan but there I dont see how the ACC is better than the SEC. Though I will say GT got hot. I doubt both of these teams(VT and BC) would sniff the SEC championship.

FSU finished in a tie for the Atlantic with BC but lost the head to head. They just had a sex crime committed on them by Florida at home last weekend.

I think they would sell more tickets if it were in North Carolina. But BC doesnt travel. They were #2 in the nation last year and were on page 7 of their sports section in Boston.

I think college football's 6 "BCS" conferences should all expand to 16 teams (two divisions of 8), and they should all play a championship game. Kick the remaining 20-some teams out of Div I-A (sorry Temple). Then have an 8-team playoff featuring the 6 championship game winners plus 2 at-large teams.

This way, the championship games are HUGELY important, and there is no chance for a rematch of a regular season game (since you would only play teams in your division). Re-align the divisions every few years for variety.

This would make college football even more exciting to watch, the regular season games are still just as important, conference championship games will be premier events, and we end up with an undisputed national champion every year. Teams like Boise State, Utah, etc will have their chance to contend with teams like USC for a playoff spot, without having their fate be in the hands of biased human voters.

It was Boston College and Va Tech in Florida. Maybe if it was FSU and Miami in Florida. I imagine the crowd will be even smaller this year as Boston College is nowhere near as good as last season.

The ACC is hardly a great football conference, just alot of decent to good teams and no championship quality teams. They have 10-12 teams that will go bowling this year and even the perennial cellar dwelling Bluedevils are no longer a cakewalk.

Once the game rotates to Charlotte, it will stick there. Heck, the Hokies brought 45k fans to Charlotte for a regular season game against East Carolina this year. UVA and UNC have brought similar numbers to the crappy bowl game there.

People have to understand that the ACC is unique among major football conferences, in that it has four smaller private schools (Duke, Miami, BC, Wake) that don't have large fan bases that can fill an NFL stadium. It doesn't mean that these schools can't play football, it just doesn't lend itself to a 'big time' atmosphere. The presence of these schools in the ACC is an overall benefit, both academically and in other sports (basketball, soccer, etc)

Hrm... if the tickets were B1G3 it would be a deal to take a trip to watch my Hokies play a slow, defensive game... and enjoy the weather and cheap gas and all night drive...
however, i find it more fun to watch all the games in HD while playing on my 360... if only both teams had an offense to match that defense...
instead we get another year of top 10 defense, and bottom 20/30 offense...
still... Go Hokies...

The Big 12 Championship game is having trouble selling out as well. I don't think they've gone Buy One Get One Free route though.
