1st, yea, there's a lot of "downtime" watching a football game, this is easily fixed by watching it off a DVR or recorded DVD, 2nd, yea, no one get hurt, that's why the NFL just coughed up 750 million to take care of players who have had and are still dealing with the effects of head injuries, but I guess there all faking it right??
that's the stupidest part: you go all that length to make sure they don't get hurt on the field, but as a consequence of this they go gaga when they're older.
What about leaving the protections aside so they don't even crash into each other so violently?
This would do more for the brain than those helmets.

Soccer should be called football and American football term used when referring to teams like the Steelers or Jets for example.

well, then the English, the creators of soccer, should not have openly adopted the term soccer so many generations ago.

seems they prefer it.

Hmm, kinda hard to play tackle football without violent contact, nature of the beast, at least now they know that brain damage is a possibility if you want to make a living at it..

Yeah, and billions is spent on cancer research too, but that doesn't mean grandma got lymphoma by strapping on a helmet and prancing around in the grass.

so the OP doesn't like football. OK.

I don't like watching sweaty half naked men roll around on the floor. But I don't feel the need to make a thread about it, then attack the people that do like to watch it.
You sure you are being completely honest with yourself there rudeguy?

Rudeguy likes participating, not watching. :whiste:

Your a blithering idiot, virtually every neurologist who has examined this issue has come to the conclusion that repeated blows to the head are very bad for the brain, except yours, because its' marble-size means you could dive off a cliff onto a concrete bed without any noticeable harm..

What really pisses me off about football is that its just about the most expensive thing on TV. The major networks pay a lot of carry it. Sports channels are by far the most expensive bundled channels on cable. I have to pay for it all even if I don't give a damn. I wish all the sports stuff were exiled to its own add-on bundle so I don't have to subsidize it anymore.

Look up the history of American Football, starting with the inception of the game. It began in the mid-late 1800s (1880ish iirc) as a bastard child of Rugby, and for the first few decades of the game (through the early 1900s?), the uniforms were basically just like Rugby.

A ton of people died, relative to the number of those who played it. At the height of it all, it was basically common to see at least one death every week of the season.

The pads and rules were developed to PREVENT it all, while also making it a different game.

It's the very heart of the game, the very rules, the ones that make the game NOT rugby, that makes it that much more dangerous than rugby - at least when it comes to long-term neural health.
The guys who play Rugby are beasts, no joke, and the hits can be brutal and dangerous - but all the differences in the rules and play style (forward pass, what kind of hits are legal and not, etc) entirely breeds the type of contact seen in American Football.

You're not going to do away with the brutal hits by removing padding. That will only return the game to the most dangerous days of the sport.
They don't have to look like roid-raging guys for the hits to be hard and constant enough, padding or not, to produce the long-term damage we see.

What makes American Football what it is (regardless of amount of padding), is what makes it so potentially damaging to long-term neurological health.

Great opening post!!! Now All we will hear about is the final 7th round draft choice that would be happier in Frisco (no pun intended).

Must be pretty sweet getting paid 100 mil to stand around a field a month out of a year.

I think college football is pretty good. It has this atmosphere around it that pro doesn't. I only really watch it because there's nothing else going on in the middle of winter on a Sunday.

Otherwise... Hockey FTW.

I can see why people like watching it, but it's an extremely boring sport to play if you're not QB, running back, or wide receiver.
