It is poorly worded, which is why they clarified what they meant in the paragraph that I already quoted. People are being lazy when they use the phrase "new rules"

According to the new rules, defenders cannot initiate contact with receivers after 5 yards downfield when the quarterback is in the pocket with the ball.

It is not a new rule. They changed the wording of the EXISTING rule and are putting more emphasis on calling the penalty. You even said that you understand that rule was there last year, but you didn't remember it being an automatic first down. You have yet to find anything to back up that statement. Go and find any game log from last year and you will see all illegal contact penalties resulting in a first down.

Like I said, the shoddy reporting is irrelevant to the actual rule.

Well that's what I get for believing in craps I read from the internet, and even from the broadcasts, they make it seems like this is brand new. And I honestly don't remember ever seen an automatic first down given for illegal contact that is not PI; I thought it was 5 yards, and sometimes that resulted in first down. Please, there are three teams on the court and the third team often plays a more important role than the other two. What percentage of all possessions ends with a whistle? And, the fouls are not called fairly with super stars having a different standard applied than the lesser players.

They are skilled and athletic but the game, as it's played now, sucks!

I watched a few games over the weekend from late last week. At least the calls appeared to be consistent. It was far better than last year's replacement refs.

I noticed in some cases the call was holding rather than illegal contact. The defense is always trying to disrupt the offensive passing attempts...that can be done by bumping the WRs off the line to throw off their timing or disguising cushion when playing zone to bait the QB. When corners are playing press coverage and playing man, you're going to see a lot more of these calls made. I think the worst I saw from last week's film was when a corner tripped over the WR's feet and it was the corner who went face down on an underthrown ball.....they called the penalty.

Some of us like seeing the rosters come together and see the backups play. I used to go as a kid to the bears camps and Mike Singletary remembered me every year. Had Gary Fencik throw balls to me when I was 12 and give me pointers. Have most signatures from the starters in 85 on a football. I know sucks right....

I have a walter jersey signed by walter that I asked my wife to bury me in...


Its a great thing to do if you really love football and had played in the past.

After the 43 - 8 beating, stomping, trouncing, flogging, trampling, humiliation, etc... Whatever you want to call it in the SB, you know why they're now ”enforcing” this rule. You should see some of the calls, just plain ridiculous.

In case you want to forget, 43 - 8. Never forget!

Edit: to clarify, the rule is not new, the penalties are new, and how they're enforcing it.

Those calls may indeed be ridiculous (I haven't watched any preseason) so we'll see how it plays out. My point was just that it's not a new rule. Just like how the tuck rule was already in place before Brady's infamous "tuck rule" game.

Take Shaw in his prime and match him up one-on-one full court with any point guard and Shaq would get skunked 9 out of 10 times. He'd never make it to the other end before having the ball stolen from him and he never could shoot worth a damn.
