I never really liked that it's an automatic first down, that's too much of a help. I always felt it should be a 5 yard penalty and a replay of the down.
I thought it should be like the the face mask calls - in some cases, 5 yards. In other cases, more. Otherwise, if it's always just 5 yards, then committing that foul saves a huge play.

while i find hockey highly entertaining and am a fan, to say it requires more skill is just asinine. they both require tons of skill in different ways, some harder than the other in each sport. it's much harder to get 11 players on a team on the same page for 1 play than it is to get 5 players on the same page for a play during a hockey game, which rarely happens (designed plays with all 5 players).

i'd also argue that the qb position in the nfl is the hardest position in any professional sport out there.

Well, of course it's difficult to get all 11 players on the same page. Remember, some of those players are linemen. "Hi, my name is Doug. Number 86. <looks down at his shirt> Oh shit. 98"

Some of us like seeing the rosters come together and see the backups play. I used to go as a kid to the bears camps and Mike Singletary remembered me every year. Had Gary Fencik throw balls to me when I was 12 and give me pointers. Have most signatures from the starters in 85 on a football. I know sucks right....

I have a walter jersey signed by walter that I asked my wife to bury me in...

Its a great thing to do if you really love football and had played in the past.

I went to a Coca Cola factory and got a Coca Cola t-shirt. I want to be buried in it.

I simply do not understand what meaning there is in being buried in what is essentially a shirt made for a for profit corporation.

Bury me in a t-shirt with a picture of my kids. Atleast that has some meaning.

Really, you should give tennis a try. There is no sport like it

I would say to really appreciate watching tennis, one has to play it. Even if you aren't great (which I'm not), after playing a few matches, you appreciate the skill and athleticism involved a lot more.

Oh yes indeed. There was a time when I used to play it 3 to 4 times a week. It really is a great sport to play, both skill and stamina wise

Walter Payton was as good a person as he was a football player and meeting him as a kid was awesome. Its like the time you first met your scoutmaster...

If your scoutmaster was incredibly fast and of the opinion "I will not just let someone push me out of bounds, they are going to feel it!"

I don't find it to be a troll so much as a comment about priorities in life. There are people out there with shrines in their houses - entire room(s) devoted to their favorite team. I don't even think the NFL players are that fanatical about it. If watching pro-football is such an important and integral part of your life as to want to be buried in sports memorabilia, then, I share his sentiment that you (in our opinions, not trolls) have a pretty misplaced sense of priorities in life.

I see some of my friends - they work 8 to 5 jobs, and are often not home until later. Sometimes they have to work on Saturdays. Then, Sunday morning, they're in front of their televisions, watching the pre-pre game show while eating breakfast, and the pre-game show, and 3 different games, switching from channel to channel and watching 2 televisions, for the 1pm games, and the 4pm games, and the evening game. Many of these guys have families. There's a reason for the term "football widow" - and while many think of it as a humorous term, I think it's a pretty sad commentary about society.

But, why is it sad? If your most prized possession is an article from a hero, someone who inspired you in life, who cares if you are buried with it or not? being buried with a picture of your kids is equally asinine as being buried with a football jersey.

And, I'm sure those spending their day enjoying watching football are wrong as well. Better not tell that to anyone else spending their day enjoying anything else. Priorities that you speak of? They aren't missing work in your anecdote. They are still fulfilling their role, except for a single day of the week they dedicate to hobby.

Ya, not trolling dude. Football for entertainment, sure. Football as a priority in life to the extent that in death, you enshrine a team more so than family seems to be the ultimate manifestation of a misplaced priority.

DrPizza said it pretty much summed up my opinion though.

Wife: Honey, our son just took his first steps!
Husband: Shut up, I need to watch this replay of an incomplete pass

I guess some people think this is normal.

Since we are going to extremes,

Wife: Honey, I need more money to buy some dumb shit.
Daughter: Daddy, I need money to buy slutty outfits to wear under my clothes for my much older boyfriend to rip off me later!
Son: Dad, I need money to buy pot so I can pretend I fit in, when all my friends just keep me around so they can get a chance at my slutty sister.
Husband: Thank god Tom Brady doesn't want my money. Please, save me NFL!

Priorities in life:
1) Football
2) family
3) ???

or in more universal terms
1) Entertainment
2) family
3) ???

Quit trying to anchor the conversation this way. There is nothing wrong with football (entertainment). But the priorities in life should be:
1) family
2) Football
3) ???

or in more universal terms
1) family
2) Entertainment
3) ???

God, you can enjoy football. All day as a matter of fact. But to put it above family is insane.

How is being buried in anything putting family below football? Should you, rather, request to be buried with your wife and kids? That will keep them close!

Quit trying to act like a possession that has some sentimental value is putting priorities anywhere. He could also be buried with other shit, you know? My grandfather was buried with 76 pennies. Did he put money over his family? Omg! It couldn't be the fact that when he arrived in America, he had $0.76 and that had some meaning to him and his family.

Care to clarify this in terms of the scope of the conversation we are having?

Atleast Ns1 sees the humor in all this.

The scope is: you stating being buried in a possession from someone's childhood is putting whatever hobby that possession is from (in the case, football) over family.

Ya, the 76 cents is symbolic in terms of PROVIDING FOR HIS FAMILY. So, thanks for making that point that supports my argument.

I've reconsidered. For some people, the greatest accomplishment of their life is owning an autographed football jersey. I presume for many, it's because they never got off their ass and accomplished anything, choosing instead to enjoy life vicariously through the television. M-F: working for someone else. Monday night: Monday night football. Rest of the week nights: some sit-coms, maybe a few re-runs, a drama series or two or three or four, mow the lawn on Saturday, and 12 hours of football on Sunday.

^^^ (That time, it was somewhat meant as trolling, though sadly, that's how a LOT of people live their lives; though Saturdays are mow the lawn and Nascar. And toss in replacement sports the rest of the year.)
