I played HS football for one year. I quit when I realized I was just working my butt off for no reason, since our school wasn't a major division school, so the likelihood of recruiters seeing us was non-existent. Unless you're getting a lot of girls, or just love being in boot camp, it ain't worth it without the recruiters. It'll affect your grades eventually if you don't sacrifice too.

I played soccer throughout HS, and i can say that by watching some of the HS football practices. All i can say is that we, the soccer players had it easy.

I heard, atleast in my old HS, if you miss one football practice, the coaches will make you run until you throw up. Geez :Q

I play baseball... I run one lap for warm up and that's it for running... well, maybe a few sprints right before game time

Recruiters? That is NOT something you worry about in highschool unless your migicaly gifted. Football is a sport that takes time to get good at, most players are not just born 'good', its just as much mental as it is physical. In highschool all that matters is being in top shape and paying attention to everything thats tought. If your an athlete then the physical part is really no big deal. You never hear an NFL player bitch about how hard the workouts are. I played all 4 years and the only time I ever thought anything of the exercise was when I had a stomach ache or a bad nights sleep. I had it pretty tough to. 1'st string running back all 4 of the years I played, and practically a wide receiver with all the passi plays I had to run and practice. I cant imagine how many miles I've ran over the 4 years I was in highschool, I'm positive I'll never run as much as I did in those 4 years as I will for the rest of my life though. You play the sport because you love it, and if you EVER have second thoughts about playing, the sport is not ment for you. Ask any person in the NFL and they'll tell you the same thing.

Ya know... some people play 'cause they like the game... imagine that...

I played soccer in HS and our warm up lap was a 1 1/4 mile run. Nothin' like doin' that 2x a day in the disgustingly humid Indiana heat...

It was different at my high school. We had a awesome Soccer program (11th in the nation one year), but our Football sucked. Thus, Soccer was harder than football.

I remember one practice where the whole team had to sprint to one of the field and back in a certain ammount of time. One person didn't make it (I think our keeper, who normally doesn't have to run), and so we were told to keep doing it untill we all got it in the right ammount of time.

Of cource, now everyone was just going to go slower because we had just sprinted and were a bit winded. So, we ended up doing sprints the ENTIRE PRACTICE.

I just went home and went to sleep after that, even thought it was only 8:00pm or so

High school football is actually pretty easy in terms of practice and the pounding your body takes...I played Division III and Division I college football, and the physical damage done is only worth it if you truly love to play. As far as being worried about who sees you..if you are good they will find you!

That's good words NeoV. The good players do get noticed......just put forth effort on the field and it'll happen!

I only played for one year, and then quit the team. I was offensive and defensive left tackle, and it sucked. Going to practice all the time sucked, and I didn't like the sport too much. After a while, I realized that I was working my ass off for nothing, so I decided to quit. My coach argued with me over my decision, telling me about how it can give you a free ride through college, etc, but I told him "I would rather be sitting in front of a computer doing something I really like instead of playing some stupid ass game that's gonna get me nowhere."

As of right now, I have a 75% paid scholarship for 4 years to any school in FL due to my grades. I have accumulated enough money in small scholarships to pay for the remaining 25% and books for my first two years.

For about last 2 years i was @ the HS, our soccer program was pretty decent. Especially during my Junior, our soccer team went 23-3(16-0 in district 5A and went on a 21 game winning streak ... finally lost at TX state semi-finals ) for the whole year.
Since most of us played both club and HS, and it was a mutual understanding between the HS coach and the club coaches that HS concentrates on skills & set plays where as club concentrated on endurance and stamina.

But still, watching the varsity football team during their off season workout's simply amazes me with what they all have to do to stay in shape.

I hear ya rbloedow. As far as you folks being all self righteous about playing the game for fun, I also played it for fun. But you have to be realistic about what you'll get out of it, and weigh the pro's and con's. In Miami, football especially at Miami Sr. High etc, was all about getting recruited to go play college ball. There were 3 guys on my team who quit and actually transferred to Miami Sr. so they would have an actual chance of having recruiters see them. Folks who say that "if you're good you'll get noticed" are dreaming. You need a great coaching staff to push for you, and the name recognition of the school. If the coaching staff isn't concerned about those things, you'll be wasting your time. Add to that the fact that my school was only a year old, and you can see why I believed it wasn't worth it.

I decided to focus on my studies. I continued to play football with MY FRIENDS. Many of whom were the same guys who played on the team. We played every Saturday...full contact, no pads. So don't get all self righteous with me about "some people play the game because they love it." I live in the real world.

Focusing on my studies instead of "boot camp" allowed me to get a full scholarship to go to college. I just graduated in May, and this week I'll be starting my studies at law school.

Almost none of the guys who played their hearts out got anything out of the game in HS. They didn't get scholarships, and the vast majority of them I've run into didn't go to college. A few didn't even finish HS because they got their girlfriends pregnant.

I made the right choice, based on my circumstances.
