If you have $110, which pentium will you get? Celeron or Pentium III? I want to build a new computer. I am just confused which processor I need to choose. I am not talking about overclocking. Which faster processor will I get for $110? Celeron or pentium III?

celeron 1.3 retails at googlegear for 98.00

pentium 3 866/133 fsb retailsat googlegear for 107.00

but you haven't stated if that 110.00 includes mobo?

you may already have the motherboard but not knowing your rig specs it would really be hard to recommend a processor to you

hope this helps

If you are also getting a new mobo (motherboard), and plan on overclocking, the Celeron 1.0A overclocked to 1.33+ Ghz would be your best bet.

It really depends on your computer usage. If you're not a 'true power user', then the Celeron with the higher clock speed will be the performance per $$$ best value. The Athlon is a fantastic choice for web surfing, gaming, and such. I would grab the highest clocked Tualtin Celeron if you already have a motherboard. Otherwise, the ECS product and a T-bird are cheap and easy. Don't flame me AMD zealots.

I am a AMD nut, but I will say celly. You can OC them by bumping the fsb from 100 to 133 with the stock fan. The celley has the better $$ to performance ratio

Celeron. For the buck, Celeron is faster talking stock-to-stock comparision. I'm not alone who feels "Pentium III" sounds better than "Celeron=Celery=Cellie". There is a thing called self-pleasure of having PIII instead of Celeron economy. Despite that, Celeron gives more performance per $ and there is no question about that.

Above statement is made under the assumption that overclocking is not a feasible option. Even though may not be apparent, overclocked system will have compromised stability compared to non OC'ed system. This is why you don't see overclocked mission critical systems. OC'ing ability varies greatly from processor to processor and batch-to-batch and you really can't predict the final speed. Enthusiasts feels overclocking is the way to go,but non-enthusiasts who just want to get their work done don't need this extra complication.

I agree that overclocking can be an added complication. However, I can't agree an overclocked system compromises stability. While I am an avid overclocker, I have seen stock systems that are not 100% stable. On the other hand when you put a ridiculous amount of hours into your overclocked system to make sure it is stable, it often gets tested to the extreme and ends up being very stable. Yes, there are some people who overclock and don't take the proper precautions to insure 100% stability. And you cannot count on a particular cpu to reach a predetermined speed, all are different. But what about when Intel takes a Northwood 2.2GHz qualified cpu and down bins it to a 1.6a because there is a bigger demand for lower clocked cpu's. You then put it on your brand new DDR P4 board that has proper AGP and PCI dividers along with some good PC3000 DDR. Does this mean at 2.13GHz you are compromising stability?

Back to the original subject: For $110 and no overclocking I would forget Intel all together and get an Athlon XP 1500. If you want to try a little overclocking then the Celeron 1.0a is a very good bang for the buck for only $76 shipped. I have used two that reached 1400MHz with very little effort.

With all due respect, if he doesn't know what "mobo" stands for, I doubt he will be overclocking anytime soon.

Go for the best Pentium III you can get for your money. Something with the most cache (256 or 512) and if your mobo can run a 133 fsb, get one that runs at 133. PIII Tualatin would be ideal IF your mobo can run it and I know the newer i815's can.

As far as day-to-day use it shouldn't make a difference. I don't have any way to prove this, but it is possible that long term stability is questionable.

Would you feel safe in a plane with an overclocked onboard computer?
