I don't see why people consider Bioshock to be scary.

Most likely, you'll have natural camo tonic equipped so nobody actually jumps you, they'll sit goofily until u shotgun them in the face. Also, having blood lust + wrench tonics means you are practically unstoppable at beating them down. Not to mention vita chambers.

Same thing with FEAR. It's hard to be scared when you are uber.

Witch not so much. Actually L4d is the least scary now that I've played infected.

They made it so you hear the witch a mile away.

-Turn off lights
-If avoidable, walk around
-If not, stand back and open fire all at the same time

If you have a shotgun, walk right up to her, aim point blank at her head and fire until she's dead. I just did a whole campaign like this, she never even got to move.

The witch becomes a joke when you learn how to crown her - I do it with the pump shotgun with ease now, and only on Expert is there any significant risk of failure (other difficulties you don't even need to hit the head). Auto shotty makes it a complete farce and only the newest/most incompetent players are at any risk.

Its so easy to do on Vs. (which is Normal difficulty) I'll actually go and kill the witch even if its out of the way and super easy to avoid just to piss off the other team and freak out any noobs on my team.

Witch on Expert before auto shotties is the only time I'm ever wary of her now, however because campaign mode lets you keep tier 2 as soon as you get them, its pretty rare to have many encounters without one...

For an underlying sense of dread, Silent Hill 2 really did it for me. That was the only game that really made me a little hesitant to even move forward. System Shock 2 was close. The first Resident Evil had a bunch of good scares, but mostly just the dog-through-the-window kind of startle, not really that ongoing, uneasy feeling that can keep you on edge.

...and I know it's been a month since this comment, but I have to say something about this. Assuming you started gaming when you were 5, do you know how old you would have to be to achieve your goal? Time's up, here's a hint: 500,000,000,000 years old. Good luck getting past 95%.

The first game to scare the crap out of me was the original Alone in the Dark. When those zombies popped out from around the corner, when the rocking chair rocks when you first walk into the attic. When something is banging under the floor boards. Now the graphics suck, but back in the day, it was one scary game.

Doom 2 scared me like nothing has since. The first time the pinky demon started chewing me from behind i jumped out of my chair and couldnt' play for a week. Then in a later level when the pyro (otherwise known as archvile) showed up. I didn't see him at first, just heard him moaning ... then I start burning for no reason. Finally i see the POS and he's shambling around like a zombie richard simmons.

Fear was kinda creepy at times but the girl did not scare me. In fact, the first time I saw her I ran at her shooting. I died
DOom 3? Freakish scripted moments but nothing scary. And they made the cyberdemon so easy to kill.

I'll have to try left for dead.

Funny, I didn't find Ravneholm that scary. However, those freakin' wearwolf dog things that go screaming after you are pretty damn scary. Especially when you are at the very end of the level on the roof and they are coming up the the downspout howling......

System Shock 2 really instills that level of dread in you. Funny how with all these graphics, they can't really yet replicate this perfectly in other games. DIII was a good try and was pretty scary but the monster in the closet thing got old. I think I'll have to try Dead Space if I can put up with the controls.

L4D is pretty damn scary when you first try it. You become desensitized to it after awhile but it's one of those games when you first play it (am I the only wuss bag?) You don't want to go around the corner for fear of what's there .... I agree, the Witch is awesome.

Condemned is pretty eery. I forgot about Undying. Not bad, but that didn't do it for me. The Catacombs in Thief 2 is great for a scare as is the Orphanage level in Thief 3.

I really enjoyed a level in the 2nd Painkiller (ad on) that was some type of Oprhanage level. The guitar starts blaring and all of a sudden kids are crawling on the ceilings toward you. That rocked.

I gotta say the splicer in Bioshock is good for a jump

also in Bioshock when you're in the dentist wing and one moment it's empty. the lights go out and the demented female splicers come at you from out of nowhere.

I was exactly the same way when I first started. It was especially bad because I was playing single player and you can't progress through the campaign unless you are the one who advances. So you are always the first one through the door.

But it is true what you say, you get desensitized. I think the biggest thing is after a while you realize that getting hit by a zombie really doesn't hurt you that much. It's the hordes that can kill you. I find now I sometimes just run into a pitch black room without looking in first.

L4D is a little more tense on expert mode. I only have dialup, so I've only played it single player. But everything hits a lot harder on expert.

Some one on steam forums actually said it best.
Difficulty of L4D settings.
Easy - 1
Normal - 2
Advanced - 4
Expert - Over 9000

They really need a setting between expert and advanced, I only really have trouble with the finales on advanced...but usually can't get past the 3rd level on expert.

How much more difficult are the tanks in advanced? Sometimes they are pretty tough on advanced, especially with a team that's no good. I think their health varies from tank to tank, so the tough ones of expert must be ridiculous.

Except when you let your guard down because you don't see any enemy markers and end up getting ambushed from behind by those creepy feral ghouls .

Also, I was looking at the Fallout 3 Wiki and ended up seeing some spoilers about a certain building that might be on the same level as the haunted house from VTM:B......

(haven't explored it yet myself)

I've played all of F3 and I think I know what building you are talking about and it is nowhere near as scary as VTM:B's haunted house, not by a long shot. Nothing is in F3.

Google Shalebridge Cradle and you can find tons of cool interviews and information about the author and the level. The level itself wouldn't be half as scary if it weren't for the audio - extremely well done.

I haven't ready anything about health varying from tank to tank, but their health does vary based on the difficulty setting. From what I've read, tanks have 8000 health on advanced and 8000 on expert (6K versus, 4K normal, 2K easy) so they should be no more difficult actually.

They can be a bit of a challenge on advanced, but generally only if you encounter them in a cramped building. Its pretty easy to kite them outdoors unless you have other infected to deal with (and you generally don't) but indoors its easy to get backed into a corner or hung up on something long enough for the tank to catch up to you.

When playing with bots it doesn't really matter. A bot will get his ass smashed to the ground and probably will die since he'll keep shooting the tank with pistols, preventing you from drawing his aggression.

Tanks aren't really the reason expert is so much harder though, except that fighting a tank after being shredded by other infected and with no health packs is hard. Expert has more regular infected and they hit harder. And the special infected seem to attack at a more rapid pace.

Yep, regular infected in Expert are what make it noticeably more difficult. I think they do between 10-20 per hit. Also, friendly fire is much more deadly in Expert. One hit, depending on how close you are and where it hits, can easily incap a teammate. So not only are the regular infected deadly if you get surrounded, it's also harder to protect your teammates.

As far as the witch, I think I've been in a couple of matches so far where I've cracked up and started laughing, usually when she glitches and gets stuck on something and you end up hearing her increasingly frantic theme song for like two straight minutes when there's no witch in sight.

The first game that made me jump was Rescue on Fractalus, and that was on like a 2mhz Atari 400 Impressively done.

I encountered this game in my mid teens and must say that to this day it remains the damn scarest I ever played. The second most scary then was "Blood" on the PC, but it came nowhere as close. Today's commercial video games just don't seem to be the thing any more :-(

The FEAR incident where you go down the ladder and Alma suddenly appears in front of you when your view pans around, and then Fettel is waiting at the bottom when you turn to face the other direction caused me unload a clip of ammo - almost in more ways than one.

I seriously didn't stop firing until Fettel's apparition was long gone; one of the few, genuine panic moments I've experienced in PC gaming.

I thought Doom 3 was really intense, and the intensity made it "scary" for me. But I realize Doom 3 is love it or hate it. I loved every minute of it.

Doom 3 had some good scary moments, but a lot of the later levels were clearly of worse quality. (This is a problem with tons of FPS games actually) In the early levels you'd have stuff like the imp tearing through a staircase and jumping into your face. By the later levels, Doom 1 monster closests were so common that you knew every room you entered would have at least one and you probably could guess with great accuracy where it was before it opened.

The moment that really got to me was in a counter-strike match.

I was the only one left on my team, I was up on some storage containers hiding, trying to see where the enemy was.

There was 4 of them left. I saw 1 walk by( everyone was walking, no noise at all.) so I dropped behind him and killed him. I started to run and gun after that, and got 2 more that were coming to the point where there friend died.. I died right after that, the 4th came behind me and killed me.

This whole thing had my heart pounding, I was so close to killing them all.
